| Vernon pulled up a 47-46 upset overtime victory over Pope John in the championship
game of the 2003 SCIL Boys Basketball Festival on Saturday in Hardyston at Wallkill Valley Regional High School.
It was the fourth SCIL title for the Vikings and first under second-year head coach Matt Ferguson. Pat Dunnigan, who was named the tourney's MVP, tossed a free throw through the twine with two ticks left in the first OT period to snap a 46-46 stalemate in a game that had the score knotted nine times with six lead changes. Dunnigan netted 14 points with three of them coming in the OT period. Jon Palmieri tallied 13 points with Matt Kennedy tossing 11 into the basket as the Vikings upped their overall record to 17-7. Billy Collins was the top gun on the Lions' attack, popping 14 points through the rim while Brandon Mefford finished with 13 as he converted 6 of 10 opportunities from the charity stripe. Daniel Falkowski added a dozen points. |
