Boys Basketball Report for Week of February 12, 2001

Lions claim hoops title (Pope John 41 - High Point 22)
Leading by one point after eight minutes, Pope John went on a 14-2 run in the second quarter and finished with a 41-22 rout of High Point on Monday in Sparta as the Lions clinched the SCIL boys basketball championship with a 16-1 league mark and one-game remaining.
Marty O'Hora was top gun on the Lions attack, hitting the hoop with a game-high 15 points, seven of which came at the charity stripe as the Lions increased their lead to 31-18 entering the final quarter when they went on a 10-4 run down the stretch.
Chris Ross chipped in with seven points, Brandon Mefford added six, Nick Mabunay flipped five through the twine, Dave Williams netted four while Bill Collins and Erik Vaughn finished with two points apiece.
On Friday evening, the Lions had clinched at least a tie for the SCIL crown by defeating Lenape Valley 59-48. O'Hora netted a dozen of his game-high 22 points in the first half when Pope hohn jumped out to a 24-18 lead. Mefford was runnerup in the scoring column, popping 17 points into the basket.
Smith's 20 rally Chiefs past Rangers (Hopatcong 48 - Wallkill Valley 40)
Bobby Smith was top gun on the attack as Hopatcong rallied to a 48-40 win over Wallkill Valley on Friday. Smith finished with a game-high 20 points, netting 15 in the second half when the Chiefs rallied from an eight-point deficit at intermission. A senior guard, Smith pulled down 17 rebounds and was chosen the sportsinthegardenstate.com/Sussex County Boys Basketball Player of the Week while teammate Marlon Winbush hit the hoope with eight points. The win was the seventh overall against 13 setbacks for the Chiefs.
Wendell's 26 points propels Spartans (Sparta 68 - Kittatinny 56)
Junior forward Geoff Wendell continued his shooting spree as he pumped a game-high 26 points through the iron, nine of which came in the third quarter when the Spartans went on a 26-15 surge to defeat Kittainny 68-56. Charlie Kirkner chipped in with 11 points while Kyle Garniner, Brett Mora and Ryan Tooley popped eight points apiece into the basket. John McGinniess and Steve Zawicki netted 11 points apiece for the Cougars.
Maul fires Braves past Wildcats (Newton 75 - High Point 52)
Senior Fred Maul turned in a double-double effort, netting a career-high 21 points and hauling down 11 rebounds while picking off three steals to lead Newton to a 75-52 victory over High Points. Kevin Pokrywa chipped in with a game-high 23 points while Billy Sisca hit the hoop with 17 points and dished off six assists.
Caska nets 16 for Mustangs (Notre Dame-PA 66 - Sussex Tech 36)
Sussex Tech opened and closed strong but the Mustangs could not keep up withe Notre Dame (PA) in the second half after trailing 21-19 at the halftime break. Kevin Caska was top gun for the Mustangs, netting a team-high 16 points, 11 of which came in the first half.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of February 5, 2001

Dombroski keys Wildcats (High Point 49 - Wallkill Valley 44))
Senior forward Rob Dombroski keyed a 22-7 run down the stretch to rally High Point to a 49-44 victory over Wallkill Valley on Friday in Hardyston. Dombroski pumped eight of his game-high 19 points through the iron in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Shawn Ztanze added a dozen points to the Rangers column. On Tuesday, Dombroski led the Wildcats to a 68-60 victory over Hopatcong, netting 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds to earn sportsinthegardenstate.com/ Sussex County Boys Basketball Player of the Week honors. Ztanze netted a career-high 18 points while Chris Rudanovic hit the hoop with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Sparta rally hands Lions first SCIL setback (Sparta 46 - Pope John 40)
Junior Geoff Wendel netted all seven Spartan points when Sparta snapped a 39-39 deadlock to defeat Pope John 46-40 on Friday evening. The loss snapped the Lions' 10-game winning streak as Wendel finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Gardiner netted 11 points while Rob Fioretti chipped in with seven points and picked off six steals as the Spartans went on a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter. Marty O'Hora led the Lions, popping a game-high 27 points into the basket.
Falcons qualify for NJSIAA tournament (Jefferson 51 - Hopatcong 46)
Jefferson locked up a berth in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group II post-season tournament by defeating Hopatcong 51-46 on Friday in Jefferson. Andrew Ruiz keyed a fourth-quarter run, netting eight of his team-high 12 points when the Falcons outscored the Chiefs 16-11 over the final eight minutes. Manny Malasig added 11 points with C.J. Burdett and John Smalley chipping in with eight points apiece.
McGinniss ignites Cougars (Kittatinny 58 - Lenape Valley 38)
Kittatinny burst out to an 18-4 lead in the opening eight minutes as John McGinniss connected for 10 of his game-high 14 points in the first quarter to spur the Cougars to a 58-38 victory over Lenape Valley on Friday in Hampton. Colin Cummins netted seven of his nine points in the second quarter when the Cougars increased their advantage to 34-10 by the halftime break. Aaron Stark chipped in with 13 points and Bill Davis added 10 in the well-balance Cougar scoring attack.
Pokrywa-Maul combo sinks Vikings (Newton 61 - Vernon 53)
Kevin Pokrywa netted 19 points and Fred Maul flipped 17 into the basket to power Newton to a 61-53 victory over Vernon on Friday as the Braves captured their 12th "W" in their last 13 attempts. Kevin Deignan chipped in with a dozen points, including a apir of three-pointers while Randy Lazicki popped 18 points into the basket for the Vikings.

Benz excels for Patriots in defeat (Sparta 55 - Lenape Valley 52)
Kyle Benz turned in a pair of standout efforts during the week as Lenape Valley came close in two games before losing to Sparta 55-52 on Tuesday and 52-47 to Jefferson on Thursday. Benz, who netted eight of his team-high 14 points in the opening quarter when the Patriots jumped out to a 17-12 lead over the Spartans and hit the hoop with a season-high 19 points against the Falcons, has been chosen the sportsinthegardenstate.com/Sussex County Boys Basketball Player of the Week.
Wildcats rally catches Falcons (High Point 45 - Jefferson 41)
High Point charged down the stretch on a 20-2 run in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats rallied to defeat Jefferson 45-41 on Tuesday in Wantage. Chris Rudanovic tipped in a rebound with 17 ticks left on the game clock to give the Wildcats their first lead at 43-41. He later added a pair of free throws to cement the victory, finishing with six points. Shawn Ztanze led the Wildcats in scoring with a dozen points while Ron Dombroski chipped in with 10 and sophomore center Billy Grohs finished with four points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Malasig propels Falcons (Jefferson 59 - Kittatinny 42)
Manny Malasig netted nine of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter when Jefferson outscored Kittatinny 21-11 to cement a 59-42 victory. Andrew Ruiz added 11 points for the Falcons who led 26-22 at the halftime break.
Scully's 23 points snap Mustangs' losing skein (Sussex Tech 91 - Warren Tech 42)
Sussex Tech opened slowly, trailing 7-2 after eight minutes before finding the range and netting 89 points over the next 24 minutes to snap an 11-game winless skein with a 91-42 rout of Warren Tech. Pat Scully fired a game-high 23 points into the basket for the Mustangs while Ryan Meinhold turned in a double-double, hitting the hoop for 15 points, grabbing 16 rebounds, picking off four steals and dishing off six assists. Kevin Caska added 17 points and Bobby Scully chipped in with 15 points.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of January 22, 2001

Hendershot nets 28 as Rangers cage Falcoms (Pope John 47 - Lenape Valley 43)
Tied 23-23 at halftime, Wallkill Valley steadily pulled away in the second half to post a 65-56 win over Jefferson on Thursday in Hardyston. Chris Hendershot found the range in the third quarter, hitting the hoop with 10 of his game-high 28 points. Hendershot, who netted a game-high 23 points in a 57-44 loss to Lenape Valley on Tuesday. was chosen the sporstinthegardenstate.com Sussex County Player of the Week. Bryan Sherlock was on target down the stretch, tickling the twine 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter against the Falcons. The win was the third of the season for the Rangers who have dropped nine decisions.
O'Hora's double-double spurs Lions (Pope John 66 - Hopatcong 33)
Senior forward Marty O'Hora turned in a double-double effort to lead Pope John to a 66-33 victory over Hopatcong on Thursday in Sparta. The win was the ninth overall for the Lions against three setbacks. On Tuesday, Pope John defeated High Point 51-33.
O'Hora hit the bucket with a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pwer the Lions past the Chiefs. Pope John broke quickly, opening up an 18-5 lead after eight minutes and upping its advanbtage to 29-11 by halftime. Brandon Mefford chipped in with eights points while Ross added three and dished off a game-high four assists.
Against the Wildcats, Pope John turned on the power in the second half after leading 20-16 at the intermission. O'Hora and Don May tossed 10 points apiece into the basket to share team-honors.
Wendell's double-double propels Spartans (Sparta 50 - Vernon 46)
Junior forward Geoff Wendell continued his outstanding season as he pumped a game-high 28 points through the iron while grabbing 19 rebounds in a dominating effort under the boards. Sparta utilized Wendell's effort to defeat Vernon 50-46 and the win was the ninth of the season for the Spartans in a dozen outings.
Sparta edged in front 15-14 after eight minutes and upped its lead to 28-24 by the halftime break. The Vikings rebounded to knot the contest at 37-37 entering the fourth quarter. Kyle Gardiner, who finished with seven points, converted seven of eight opportunities at the charity stripe at crunch time to allow the Spartans to pull out the win in a game played Thursday in Vernon.
Converting 17 of 25 attempts from the free throw line while the Vikings were limited to four successful foul shots in seven tries provided the Spartans with the winning edge.
McGinniss free throws cage Wildcats (Kittatinny 32 - High Point 30)
Kittattiny won a low-scoring 32-30 decision over High Point on Thursday. Junior guard John McGinniss converted both ends of one-and-one situation with five ticks left on the game clock to give the Cougars the win. He finished with a team-high 10 points while Shawn Ztanze led the Wildcats in scoring with 10 pointsand Rob Dombroski chipped in with eight points.
Sisca's 23 spur Braves to cage Cougars (Newton 69 - Newton 50)
Billy Sisca was top gun on the attack as Newton rolled to a 69-50 win over Kittatinny on Tuesday. Sisca finished with a game-high 23 points, netting nine in the opening quarter when the Braves burst out to a 16-8 lead. The win was the eighth overall against two setbacks for the Braves.
Scott Pokrywa ignited a third quarter outburst with eight points when the Braves outscored the Cougars 28-11 to ice the decision. Pokrywa finished with 16 points.
Scully's 22 not enough for Mustangs (Immaculate Conception/Montclair 75 - Sussex Tech 49)
Sussex Tech opened and closed strong but the Mustangs could not offset a 53-26 run by the Lions from Immaculate Conception in Essex County on Tuesday. Pat Scully turned in a strong effort for the Mustangs, hitting the hoop with a game-high 22 points.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of January 15, 2001

O'Hora excels as Lions edge Patriots (Pope John 47 - Lenape Valley 43)
Marty O'Hora just missed a double-double as he powered Pope John to 47-43 victory over Lenape Valley in Sparta on Friday. O;Hora was named the sportsinthegardenstate.com Sussex County Boys Basketball Player of the Week for his effort that included a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds. Pope John edged in front 11-10 after one quarter and upped its advantage to 27-20 by halftime. Eric Vaughn chipped in with eight points for the Lions who remain unbeaten in SCIL competition.
First quarter outburst propesl Patriots past County Seaters (Lenape Valley 63 - Belvidere 32)
Lenape Valley exploded out of the blocks, going on a 23-6 run over the first eight minutes to rout Belvidere 63-32 in a non-conference game played Thursday in Stanhope. Jack Sylvester topped LVR in scoring with 17 points, five of which came at the charity where the Patriots built up a 17-1 advantage. Kyle Benz finished with 16 points while Mark Fisher added four and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Mark Lenaro chipped in with eight points, Brian Cummings nailed a pair of three-pointers for six while Mike Paradiso and Tom Togno controbuted four apiece.
Wendell's 22 points propel Sparta to 3rd straight (Sparta 55 - High Point 49)
Geoff Wendell dented the cords with a game-high 22 points, converting 7 of 8 free throw opportunities in the fourth quarter while grabbing seven rebounds as he sparked Sparta to a 55 -49 victory over High Point on Thursday. Max Greenberg was runnerup in the Spartan scoring column with nine points as the Spartans led 14-13 at the end of the opening quarter and moved to a 27-25 advantage by halftime. Rob Dombroski led the Wildcats with 14 points, nine of which he tossed into the basket in the first quarter.
Falcons hold off Viking rally (Jefferson 62 - Vernon 61)
Junior C.J. Burdett converted 8 of 11 free throw opportunities at crunch time as Jefferson held on to edge Vernon 62-61 on Friday in Jefferson. Burdett finished with a game-high 24 points as the Falcons led 12-10 after one quarter and 24-18 at halftime. John Smalley added 10 points to the Jefferson scoring column. James Platania was high for the Vikings as he dented the cords with 19 points Doug Ranconti ended with 17.
Chiefs first half surge topples Rangers (Hopatcong 48 - Wallkill Valley 38)
Hopatcong jumped out to a 12 point lead by halftime and went on to defeat Wallkill Valley 48-38 on Friday in Hardyston. Kyle Boone netted six of his team-high 11 points in the fourth quarter to preserve the vistory. Kevin Boone and Marlin Winbush added eight points apiece while Bobby Smith finished with seven, including 4 for 4 from the free throw line. The Rangers Jay Perez collared game-high honors when he hit the bucket with 14 points.
Braves rally to defeat Wildcats (Newton 74 - High Point 63)
Newton connected on 10 of 12 free throw opportunities down the stretch as the Braves rallied to defeat High Point 74-63 in Wantage on Friday. High Point led 20-16 after one quarter before the Braves Jay Smith found, bombing a trio of treys through the twine to really Newton to a 30-30 deadlock by halftime. Smit finished with 17 points while Kevin Pokrywa led all scorers with 21 points. High Point was led by Rob Dombroski with 18 and Shawn Ztanze who popped 17 into the basket.
Mustangs edged by Somerset Tech 37-34
Sussex Tech dropped three games during the week, losing to Notre Dame (PA) by a score of 60-27 Tuesday and 67-54 to Saddle River Day on Friday. Pat Scully scored nine points for the Mustangs in East Stroudsburg, PA. In Bergen County, Kavin Caska was top gun for Sussex Tech, hitting the hoop with 18 points while Phil Meinhold chipped in with a dpzen and Scully added 10. On Saturdat, Scully pumped a dozen points through the rim and Caska chipped in with 10.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of January 8, 2001

Pokrywa powers Braves

Senior forward Kevin Pokrywa netted 53 points as he powered Newton to a 62-60 win over Sparta and a 77-62 victory previously unbeaten Vernon during the week. For his effort, Polkrywa was chosen the sportsinthegardenstate.com/SCIL Boys Basketball Player of the Week,
On Saturday, Pokrywa hit the hoop for a game-high 27 points, including nine free throws to lead the Braves past the Vikings who lost for the first time after opening the season with five straight wins.. Newton jumped out to a 29-17 lead after one quarter and increased its advantage to 37-16 by halftime. Kevin Deignan, Fred Maul and Billy Sisca chipped in with a dozen points apiece as Newton upped its record to 5-2.
On Thursday, Pokrywa netted 14 of team-high 26 points in the fourth quarter when the Braves rallied from a three-point deficit to edge the Spartans. Sparta was led by junior forward who hit the hoop with a game-high 29 points.
On Saturday, Pope John used a strong third quarter to defeat Sparta 46-39 for local bragging rights. Wendell turned in a yeoman effort for the Spartans pumping 22 points through the twine but could offset a balanced Lions attack that was led by Nick Mabunay and Marty O'Hora who netted a dozen points apiece. Chris Toss added nine, Brandon Mefford seven and Eric Vaughn six for the Lions who improved to 5-3.
Lenape Valley claimed its second victory in seven outings when the Patriots defeated Kittatinny 50-31 on Saturday in Stanhope. Bobby DeKleine led LVR with 17 points while Kyl Benz tossed 10 points into the basket. Jack Sylvester chipped in with eight, Mark Fisher had seven and Brian Cummings finished with six. John McGuinness led the Cougars with 10 points.
Jefferson went on an 18-2 run down the stretch to defeat Hopatcong 57-39 on Saturday. Emmanuel Malasig led a quartet of Falcons in double figures as he netted 15 points. Jay Jourdan followed with 13, Andrew Ruiz added 11 and C.J. Burdett finished with 10 points.
Vernon defeated Lenape Valley on Thursday in Vernon as Scott Balassano was the Viking leader , netting 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Randy Lazicki and Doug Rancanti split a dozen points down the middle in the fourth quarter to preserve the win for the Vikings. DeKleine led the Patriots with 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half.
High Point rallied from a 16-7 deficit after eight minutes to defeat Hopatcong 65-54 on Thursday. Senior forward Rob Dombroski keyed High Point at crunch time, popping 11 of his team-high 15 points into the basket in the fourth quarter while teammates Chris Rudanovic with 14 points and Shawn Stanze with 13, aided the Wildcats victory. Bobby Smith led the Chiefs with 19 points.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of January 1, 2001

Spartans topple Lions in J.P. Flynn Memorial Tournament

In a see-saw battle for local bragging rights waged on the campus of the Delbarton School in Morris Township, Sparta rallied to defeat Pope Johns 55-49 in the J.P. Flynn Memorial Tournament. The win was the fifth for the Spartans against a solo setback while Pope John dropped to 3-3.
The teams battled to a 10-10 standoff at the end of the opening quarter. Sparta took a 28-25 lead off the court at halftime and Pope John went on a 10-4 run following intermission to move out to a 35-32 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Kyle Gardiner kept the Lions at bay down the stretch when he converted four free throw opportunites at crunch time. Geoff Wendell turned in a double-double for the Spartans, pumping a game-high 20 points through the iron while grabbing 11 rebounds while Rob Fioretti went to the hoop for 19 points.
Marty O'Hora topped the Lions in scoring as he tossed 16 points through the twine.
In the Milford-Matamoras Rotary Holiday Tournament in Westfall Township, PA, Vernon dropped a 59-57 decision to Minisink (PA). Scott Baldassano and James Platania led the Viking attack, netting 14 points apiece with Mike Licursi chipping in with 13 points.
Hopatcong lost a 63-54 decision to Lincoln of Jersey City in the consolation game of the Blue Tide Yuletide Tournament played in Harrison. The Chiefs led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter before the Hudson County squad bridged the second and third quarters with a 38-20 run to pull out the win. Bobby Smith topped the Chiefs attack with a 17-point output and Marlon Winbush added 11 points while Steve Howell added nine and Kyle Boone chipped in with eight.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of December 25, 2000

Baldassano's double-double powers Vikings over Rangers (Vernon 69 - Wallkill Valley 54)
Scott Baldassano turned in an impressive double-double as he powered Vernon to 69-54 victory over Wallkill Valley in Hardyston of Thursday. Baldassano was named the sportsinthegardenstate.com Sussex County Boys Basketball Player of the Week for his effort that included a game-high 25 points, including 5 of 6 from the charity stripe and 14 rebounds. Randy Lazicki contributed 15 points to the Vikings third straight triumph while Frank Monte added 11. Vernon edged in front 16-13 in the first quarter before the Vikings iced the decision by bridging the second and third quarters with a 34-21 run. Chris Hendershot was top gun for the Rangers, netting 16 points including a perfect 4 for 4 at the free throw line.
Smith propels Chiefs to 1st "W" with 27-point effort (Hopatcong 67 - Lenape Valley 61)
Bobby Smith pumped a game-high 27 points through the iron to spark Hopatcong to its first "W" of the season on Thursday in Stanhope. Hopatcong burst out to a 23-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and the Chiefs held off the Patriots rally over the remaining 24 minutes. Derek Tomasino chipped in with 13 points and Marlon Winbush tossed a dozen points through the twine while the Patriots' were led by Bobby DeKlein who finished with 14 points.
Wendell's 22 points propel Sparta to 3rd straight (Sparta 55 - High Point 49)
Geoff Wendell dented the cords with a game-high 22 points, converting 7 of 8 free throw opportunities in the fourth quarter while grabbing seven rebounds as he sparked Sparta to a 55 -49 victory over High Point on Thursday. Max Greenberg was runnerup in the Spartan scoring column with nine points as the Spartans led 14-13 at the end of the opening quarter and moved to a 27-25 advantage by halftime. Rob Dombroski led the Wildcats with 14 points, nine of which he tossed into the basket in the first quarter.
Cougar rally toppled Falcons (Kittatinny 41 - Jefferson 38)
Trailing 31-27 entering the final quarter, Kittatinny ralled behind the outside shooting of Jon McGinniss down the stretch to pull out a 41-38 win over Jefferson on Thursday in Hampton. McGinniss bombed a trio of his game total of five three-pointers through the twine in the fourth quarter to key the Cougars to go on a 14-7 run and register their first win of the season while inflicting the first defeat on the Falcons. McGinniss finished with a game-high 19 points while C.J. Burdett topped the Falcons scoring column, flipping 14 points into the basket.
O'Hora's 20 points spark Lions past Newton in battle of unbeatens (Pope John 55 - Newton 45)
Senior forward Marty O'Hora was a perfect 12 for 12 at the charity stripe as he led Pope John to a 55-45 victory over Newton in a clash of unbeaten SCIL teams on Thursday in Newton. O'Hora finished with a game-high 20 points. His classmate Danny May netted 11 points while sophomore forward Brandon Medford added nine points in his starting debut for the injured Mike Barrett who saw limited action, converting 5 of 6 opportunities at the foul line. Kevin Pokrywa and Billy Sisca led the Braces, hitting the hoop for 13 points apiece.

Boys Basketball Report for Week of December 18, 2000

Jefferson 60 - Lenape Valley 45
Leading 10-8 after eight minutes, Jefferson went on an 18-7 run in the second quarter to take control as the Falcons opened the 2000-2001 SCIL boys basketball campaign with a 60-45 victory over Lenape Valley. Coming off a 6-16 season in 1999-2000, the Falcons used a half-court trap defense to force three straight Patriot turnovers and surge into a 19-11 lead and finished the second quarter with a 9-4 run to build a 28-15 advantage when the teams left the court for intermission. Guard C.J. Burdett led all scorers with a 19-point effort while Manny Malasig, a 6-3 junior transfer from Lakeland Regional tossed 14 points into the basket. Junior Jay Jourden added a dozen points and pulled down seven rebounds despite sitting for 11 minutes after picking up two quick fouls 33 seconds into the game. Senior Ellis Franklin came off the bench to pull down 10 rebounds. Junior Bobby DeKleine, a transfer from Seton Hall Prep, led the Patriots, netting a dozen points.
Newton 68 - Wallkill Valley 46
Trailing by two after one quarter, Newton took control behind the play of senior forward Kevin Pokrywa who flipped 12 of his team-high 19 points through the twine in the second quarter when the Braves took the lead at 30-27 entering the halftime break. Senior guard Billy Sisca hit the hoop for seven of his game total of 15 points in the third quarter when the Braves surged to a 48-37 lead. The Rangers Chris Hendershot topped all scorers with a 21-point performance.
Pope John 50 - Kittatinny 35
Senior Marty O'Hora who swings between the front court and the back court, tickled the twine with a game-high 21 points to lead Pope John to a 50-35 win over Kittatinny in Hampton. The Cougers edged in front at 12-11 entering the second quarter but the Lions rallied to a 28-22 advantage by intermission. In the third quarter, O'Hora accounted for 11 of the Lions' 13 points as Pope John lengthened its lead to 41-31 going into the final eight minutes. Craig Szymczak led the Cougars in scoring as he flipped 10 points into the basket.
Sparta 57 - Hopatcong 41
Junior forward Geoff Wendel rose to the occasion at crunch time as he tossed a dozen of his game-high 22 points through the twine in the fourth quarter as Sparta snapped a 35-35 deadlock to defeat Hopatcong 57-41 in Hopatcong on Friday. Sparta edged in front 16-13 after eight minutes of action but the Chiefs roared back in the second quarter to surge into a 27-22 lead by halftime. Senior guard Rob Fioretti netted eight of his 18 points in the third quarter to rally the Spartans into a tie at 35-35 entering the fourth quarter. The Spartans converted 17 of 27 free throw opportunities while the Chiefs were 0 for 3 at the charity stripe. Steve Howell and Marlon Winbush topped the Chiefs attack as they pumped a dozen points apiece through the iron.
Vernon 50 - High Point 48
Frank Monte converted a pair of opportunities at the charity stripe with four ticks remaining on the game clock to propel Vernon to a 50-48 triumph over High Point in a Sussex County Interscholastic League boys basketball game that opened the 2000-2001 campaign in Wantage on Friday.
High Point exploded out to a 15-6 lead after eight minutes of action and the Vikings had to play catch-up the remainder of the game. They narrowed the gap to one point at 25-24 when the teams exited the hardwood for intermission. Vernon totally dominated the middle of the game, bridging the second and third quarters with a 19-0 run. By the end of the third quarter the Vikings had edged in front 35-34.
Shawn Ztanze bombed a three-pointer through the twine to give the Wildcats a final lead at 48-46 and Randy Lazicki flipped two free throws into the basket to knot the contest at 48-48, setting the stage for Monte, who finished with six points, to pull out the victory. Lazicki topped all scorers with 25 points, including 8 for 8 from the free throw line. He hit the hoop for 13 points to power the Vikings second quarter surge.
