Bowling Report for Week of February 5, 2001

Mergenthaler qualifies for state tournament

Hopatcong's Danny Mergenthaler finished second in a field of 125 bowlers competing for nine slots in the North Jersey Section 1B (Hudson, Passaic, Sussex) Bowling Championships at the new T-Bowl in Wayne on Saturday.
Mergenthaler, the sportsinthegardenstate.com/Sussex County Bowler of the Year, put together games of 223-224-245 to finish with a 692 series, trailing only Keith McCord of Bayonne who finished first with a three-game pin count of 716.
Newton's Rich Little tied for seventh place with Mike D'Angelo of Wayne Hills when both keglers turned in three-game totals of 648 pins to qualify for the individual competition at the NJSIAA state tournament that takes place Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick on Saturday.
Overall, 16 teams from the five seconds qualified to compete for the team title while 45 bowlers, nine from each sectional, will vie for individual honors.
In the girls competition, Newton's Krista Cutler has qualified for the states after rolling a 664 series to win the NJSIAA North Jersey sectional title. A sophomore, Cutler is the only girl starter on the Newton squad, averaging 190 for the Braves this season. She will attempt to become the third Newton distaff kegler to claim a state title. Kim Dodd won the 1993 title with a 587 series and her sister Karen won in 1998 with a three-game total of 689 pins.

Braves bowl over opposition

Newton completed a sweep of the titles when the Braves defeated Lenape Valley 5-2 in the championship round of the Sussex County Interscholastic League Bowling Festival on Thursday afternoon at Sparta Lanes. The Braves won the regular season title a week earlier. Krista Cutler, who rolled a 606 series against the Patriots, finished first in the NJSIAA North Jersey Sectional Championships at Bowler City in Hackensack on Saturday, posting a three-game pin count of 664. The sophomore advances to the state championships that will be contested February 17 at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick.
Cutler ignited the Braves from the outset when she opened the SCIL Festival title round with five straight strikes, added four spares and two more strikes to finish with a first game pin fall of 235. Newton won the first game against the Patriots 892-855 as Ryan Kitko finished with a 189 and Josh Kays sent 182 pins flying off the lanes.
Lenape Valley, behind the 1-2 punch of Rob Pauli with a 214 and Jeff Rugg's 213, claimed the victory in the second game by a score of 947-851 setting the stage for the winner-take-all finale. Kays sparked the Braves at crunch time, posting the top score of 193 with five strikes while senior Rich Little chipped in with a 186 score, finishing with three strikes in the 10th frame as Newton pulled out an 888-809 win to claim the post-season crown.
Little, the leadoff bowler in the Newton lineup finished with a 522 series on games of 149-187-186 while the No. 2 kegler, Mike DePue, posted a 414 three-game total on games of 137-125-152. In the middle of the five person lineup was Cutler who registered the 606 series on scores of 235-191-180. Kitko, the fourth bowler, finished with a 540 total on games of 189-174-177 and Kays in the anchor slot, bowled games of 182-174-193 to finish with a pin fall of 549.
Rugg, LVR's leadoff bowler, posted a 530 series on games of 170-213-147 with Damian Rivano rolliing a 486 series on scores of 172-146-168. J. W. Albensi, the middle man, finished with a 499 series on scores of 171-181-147 with Bryan Peliek shooting a 527 series that included games of 169-193-165. Pauli, in the anchor position, finished with a 568 series on games of 173-214-181.
Pauli was awarded gold medals for sweeping the individual honors during the overall Festival competition, registering the high series of 657 and the top game of 273 and has been selected the sportsinthegardenstate.com/Sussex County Bowler of the Week.
High Point's John Bolognini was runnerup in both categories, picking up silver medals for the second high game of 255 and the second highest three-game total of 614 pins.
In the semifinal round on Wednesday, Newton edged Vernon 4-3 and Lenape Valley blanked Hopatcong 7-0 in a mild upset. Pauli led the Patriots with a 599 series that inclued a 245 game while Rugg chipped in with a 528 series that included a 202 game. Hopatcong was led by Matt Tiritlli with a 498 series and Ryan Juskus who posted a three-game total of 495 pins.
Cutler led the Braves with a 560 series, Kitko added a three-game pin count of 520 and Kays finished with a 508 series. Vernon's hopes for an upset were led by Brendan Gascon who finished with a 598 series and Amy DeNeuf who spilled 528 pins off the lanes.
In the opening round of the Festival on Monday afternoon, top-seeded Newton blanked Sussex Tech with Little leading the way with a 611 series while Bill DeHaas fired a 544 series for the Mustangs. Lenape Valley trimmed High Point 5-2 with Pauli posting the tourney's high game and series while Rivera chipped in with a 234 game, Rugg added a 215 effort and Pelliek posted a 202 score. High Point was led by Bolognini who put up the tourney's second highest game and series.
Dan Mergenthaler, who finished the regular season with a league-leading 207 average, led Hopatcong to a 5-2 win over Spatra with a 581 series and a top game of 221. Jason Hudzik finished with a 525 series that included a 219 game while the Spartans were led by Nick Carcone who posted a three-game pin count of 563 along with a high game of 204.
Vernon bested Wallkill Valley 5-2 with Gascon leading the way with a 605 series that included games of 238 and 210. DeNeuf finished with a 571 series that included a 214 game while the Rangers were topped by Joe Scavone who recorded a 601 series with a high game of 213. Matt Avery added a 205 game.

Newton seeded No. 1 in post-season SCIL kegling tourney

Newton defeated Wallkill Valley 5-2 in the final match of the campaign to claim the 2000-2001Sussex County Interscholastic League regular season championship. Hopatcong, led by Matt Tiritilli who has been chosen the sportsinthegardenstate.com/Sussex County Bowler of the Week, blanked Sparta 7-0 to finish in second place while High Point surprised Lenape Valley by a 4-3 score, dropping the Patriots into third place in the team standings.

Josh Kays topped the Braves, posting the second high game of the afternoon when he knocked 265 pins off the lanes over 10 frames. He finished with a three-game pin fall of 627 while teammates Rich Little (575), Ryan Kitko (560) and Krista Cutler (543) turned in strong efforts. Cutler posted a top game of 213, Little had a 210 and Kitko recorded a 208.

Tiritilli led the Chiefs to sole possession of second place by defeating Sparta 7-0. Tiritilli registered the high series of the overall competition, a pin count of 631 coming on games of 246-200-185. His teammate Dan Mergenthaler finished with a 618 series as he was consistent throughout the afternoon, posting games of 212-203-202.

Sparta was led by Tom Wan who finished with a three-game total of 622 pins and the team's high game of 234 while Brandon Bressler rolled a 231 game and posted a 513 series.

High Point knocked Lenape Valley out of a tie for second place despite a 613 series by the Patriots Jeff Rugg that included games of 222 and 202. The Wildcats were paced by Bryan Backhorn's strong effort as he finished with a three-game pin fall of 561 that included games of 211 and 210.

Wallkill Valley finished in fourth place despite the loss to Newton. Aaron Purser led the Ramgers with a 584 series and the second high game overall of 257. Eric Wilson chipped in with a 214 score.

Brandon Gascon led Vernon to a 5-2 victory over Sussex Tech, registering a 545 series with a high game of 228 while Kevin Hand paced the Mustangs with a 528 series.

The quarterfinals of the post-season SCIL Tournament will be contested on Monday afternoon starting at 3:30 PM at Sparta Lanes. The seedings correspond with the regular season final standings. Vernon (6-8) has been seeded No. 5 with High Point (6-8) seeded sixth. The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday beginning at 3:30 PM with the championship finals set for Thursday at 3:30 PM.

Hopatcong tightens race SCIL kegling race

Hopatcong bumped off Newton 5-2 as Dan Mergenthaler bowled a 658 series to narrow the Braves lead to one game in the SCIL Bowling standings. Newton paces the pack with a 10-2 mark while Hopatcong and Lenape Valley are deadlocked for second with 9-3 records as each team has two regular season matches remaining.
While Mergenthaler topped all bowlers with his three-game total that was accumulated on games of 223-223-212, his teammate Jason Hudzik chipped in with 603 series that included the high game of 268 for the Wednesday after competition. Hopatcong won 2 of 3 games, posting an impressive 977-835 victory in the middle game as Brian Filak rolled a key 197 game, and the Chiefs picked up the extra point by piling a 2,769 to 2,556 advantage on total wood. Newton was led by Josh Kays who posted a 546 series and Rich Little who turned in a three-game pin count of 540. Ryan Kitko added a 203 game for the Braves.
Nick Carcone put together a 635 series on games of 216-214-204 to lead Sparta to a 7-0 blanking of Sussex Tech. Carcone was chosen the sportsinthegardenstate.com Sussex County Bowler of the Week. The Mustangs, who are guaranteed a final resting place in the cellar, were led by Bill DeHaas who fired a 214 game.
Lenape Valley bested Vernon 5-2 to remain in the hunt for the team title. Blake Coslit posted the top series by a Patriot at 602 while Rob Pauli included a 240 single game effort in his 589 series for LVR.
Wallkill Valley locked up at least a tie for a first division finish by shutting out High Point 7-0 to improve to 7-5. Ken Bair led the Rangers with a 577 series that included a 235 game while Bryan Bockhorn was high for the Wildcats, posting a 565 series that included a 204 game.

Newton increased its hold on first place in the SCIL bowling comptition to two games as Krista Cutler uncorked the high single game of the afternoon at Sparta Lanes, bowling a 241 game. She finished with a 567 series and was chosen the SPORTSINTHEGARDENSTATE.COM Bowler of the Week as she lead the Braves to a 7-0 blanking of Sparta.. Her teammate Mike DePue finished with a 559 pin count for three games and posted a 207 high game while Greg Harms topped the Spartans with a 488 series.
Hopatcong pulled into a tie with Lenape Valley for second place by shutting out the Patriots 7-0. Dan Mergenthaler led the Chiefs with a 605 series that included the second high game of 235. Ryan Juskus chipped in with a 535 series while LVR was led by Rob Pauli who posted a three-game total of 547 pins.
Wallkill Valley blitzed Vernon 7-0 as the Rangers were led by Matt Avery who tossed a 545 series. Joe Scavone added a 210 game while the Vikings top effort came from Brendon Gascon who turned in a 458 series.
Sussex Tech not only recorded its first "W" of the season, the Mustangs blanked High Point 7-0 as Kevin Hands and Mansa Gormen both registered 487 series with Mansa tossing a 192 game.

Bowling Report for Week of January 7, 2001

Trio of 600s propel Rangers on lanes

With Eric Wilson, Joe Scavone and Aaron Purser surpassing the 600 plateau, Wallkill Valley cruised to a 7-0 shutout over Sparta in Sussex County Interscholastic League bowling action contested at Sparta Lanes on Thursday. Wilson was consistently in the pocket with his deliveries, posting games of 209-205-224 to finish with the high three-game pin count of 638 as the Rangers upped their record to 5-4.
Scavone bowled games of 237-222-177 to register a 636 series while Purser added games of 202-212-191 for a three-game total of 605 pins. Dave Scivoletti aided the Rangers cause with a 203 game.

Sparta was led by Nick Carcone who posted a 210 game as the Spartans dropped to 2-7.

Newton maintained its hold on first place, upping its record to 8-1 by blanking High Point 7-0. Krista Cutler topped the Braves with a 550 series while Bryan Bockhorn led the Wildcats who dropped to 4-5 with a 534 three-game pin total.

Hopatcong defeated Vernon 5-2 as Dan Mergenthaler tossed games of 247-22-213 to finish with the high series of the afternoon at 685. His teammate Joe Verdi added a 200 game as the Chiefs upped their record to 6-3.

Brendan Gascon topped the Vikings with a 593 series that included games of 201-212-180 while Mike Potente recorded a 213 game and James Keller had a 212 as the Vikings dropped to 4-5.

Lenape Valley blanked Sussex Tech 7-0 as the Mustangs remained winless at 0-9 despite a 584 series by Kevin Hand who had a top single game effort of 236. The Patriots improved to 7-2 as Bryan Pellek's leading 541 series included a 222 game with Rob Pauli adding a 209 game and J.W. Albensi knocking 200 pins off the lanes over 10 frames.
