Champion: Jefferson High School

Most Valuable Player: Shannon McCarney (Jefferson)

Jefferson upset top-seeded Sparta 46-40 to win the SCIL Festival for the first time since 1993. It was the fourth title overall for the Falcons whi well led by Shannon McCarney. She turned in a double-double, pumping 16 points through the twine while grabbing 10 rebounds and was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player.
The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for Sparta which led 34-31 going into the fourth quarter only to have the Falcons go on a 15-6 run down the stretch.

Cimasko's triple-double spurs Vikings (Vernon 66 - Hopatcong 31)
Lauren Cimasko recorded a triple-doubel to power Vernon to a 66-31 victory over Hopatcong. Cimasko is the sportsinthegardenstate.com Girls Basketball Player of the Week as she led the Vikings to their sixth win overall in 10 games.
Cimasko hit the hoop with a game-high 15 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked 10 shots as she dominated the action in the paint.
Vernon jumped out to an 18-4 lead over the first eight minutes and the Lady Vikings increased their advantage to 33-12 by the halftime break. Erin Murphy chipped in with 13 points while Gloria Pinck contributed a dozen points to the victory.
Jent ignites Lady Spartans (Sparta 70 - Vernon 23)
Senior Meghan Jent finished with a game-high 18 points as Sparta blasted Vernon 70-23 in SCIL girls basketball on Thursday. Jent netted a dozen points in the first half as the Lady Spartans burst out to a 32-9 lead by the halftime break. Jessica Trainor had only two points but picked off six steals while Diana Dilworth flipped 10 points into the basket and blocked five shots.
Jackson ignites 4th run (Newton 50 - Kittatinny 28)
Newton broke open a close game, going on a 24-9 run through the fourth quarter to defeat Kittatinny 50-28 in an SCIL girls hoops contest played Tuesday in Hampton. Sheakia Jackson netted all seven of her points in the fourth quarter while Alexis Johnson hit the hoop with five of her game-high 15 points at crunch time. Liz Sisca tickled the twine with 15 points to share game-high honors.
Flaherty double-double propels Lions (Pope John 78 - Hopatcong 14)
Jen Behagg and Kristen Lytle sparked Pope John to a 67-32 rout of High Point in an SCIL girls hoops contested played in Sparta on Tuesday. On Thursday, it was no contest as the Lions demolished Hopatcing 78-14 to up their overall record to 8-3.
Behagg netted 11 points, dished off six assists and picked off four steals while Lytle tickled the twine with a game-high dozen points and handed off eight assists in the Lions romp over the Wildcats. Pope John led 14-4 after eight minutes and went on a 21-2 run in the second quarter to ice the decision.
Ashley Flaherty turned in a double-double against the Chiefs, netting a game-high 19 points an hauling down a dozen rebounds. Ashleigh O'Rourke dented the cords with 15 points, Erin Telling popped 13 into the basket and JoEllen Fitsgibbons finished with 11.
Hern's31 topple Patriots (Wallkill Valley 63 - Lenape Valley 42)
Hern's 31 toppled Patriots
Stephanie Hern continued her impressive senior season as she netted a game-high 31 points to propel Wallkill Valley to a 63-43 victory over Lenape Valley in Hardyston on Tuesday. On Thursday, Hern was sidelined with a leg injury and the Lady Rangers fell to Jefferson by a score of 56-31 to finish the week with an 8-5 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the SCIL standings.
Wallkill Valley opened up a 19-10 lead over the Patriots in the first eight minutes. The Lady Rangers surged into a 39-20 lead by the halftime break as Hern hit the hoop with 14 of her points. Cherie Smith turned in a strong effort under the boards as she popped nine points through the twine and hauled down 10 rebounds.
Against the Falcons, Wallkill Valley lagged behind from the start, trailing 18-6 at the end of the first quarter and 31-11 by intermission. Antoinette Bastisti was top-gun for the Lady Rangers, netting 14 points.
Balanced scoring leads Falcons past Rangers (Jefferson 56 - Wallkill Valley 31)
Jefferson relied on a balanced scoring attach to subde Wallkill Valley on Thursday on the Falcons' hardwood. Shannon McCarney led the Falcons with 14 points, Kristi DeMiceli netted 13 and Dawn Gilchrist chipped in with a nine points, all of which came on a trio of treys. Jefferson burst out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter and upped its advantatge to 31-11 by halftime.

Behagg propels Lions to back-to-back wins (Vernon 69 - Wallkill Valley 54)
Jen Behagg turned in a pair of impressive outings as she powered Pope John to 51-18 rout of Vernon and a 59-29 victory over Lenape Valley. Behagg was named the sportsinthegardenstate.com Sussex County Girls Basketball Player of the Week for her efforts that included a game-high 18 points, five assists and five steals against the Vikings and a dozen points against the Patriots. The victory over Vernon snapped a three-game losing streak as Ashleigh O'Rourke chipped in with six points and grabbed 10 rebounds. In the win over LVR, Jo Ellen Fitzgibbons topped the Lions with 14 points while Kaley Guthrie was versatile with six points, eight assists and seven steals. O'Rourke picked off eight rebounds.
Hern's 32 points power Rangers past Chiefs (Wallkill Valley 64 - Hopatcong 47)
Stephanie Hern pumped a game-high 32 points through the iron, 11 of which came at the charity stripe, to spark Wallkill Valley to a 64-47 win over Hopatcong on Friday. The Rangers burst out to a 14-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and steadily increased their advantage in posting their seventh "W" of the season. Antoinette Battishi chipped in with 16 points, seven of which were successful free throws and Cherie Smith tossed 11 points through the twine. The Chiefs were led by Monique Barbell who finished with 14 points while Krystal Blanos netted a dozen points and Katie Quigley chipped in with nine.
Braves net season-high 76 points (Newton 76 - High Point 32)
Newton was on target with its shots as the Braves bombed a season-high 76 points through the twine in defeating High Point by 44 points on Friday. Newton jumped out to an 18-6 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Kaitlyn Davey, who topped the Braves with 16 points, hit the hoop for eight in the second quarter as Newton upped its advantage to 40-15 by the halftime break. Liz Sisca chipped in with 10 points, Alexis Johnson added nine and dished off a game-high eight assists while frosh forward Sheakia Jackson came off the bench to net seven points and pull down 10 rebounds. Nicole Kelley led the Wildcats with 14 points while Nora Swanson pitched in with seven.
Falcons hold off Vikings (Jefferson 55 - Vernon 53)
In a shootout at Vernon on Friday, Jefferson jumped out to a 20-9 lead by the end of the opening quarter and led 33-16 at halftime. Following the intermission, it was all Vikings as Vernon cut the deficit to 41-36 entering the final quarter before falling two points short with a fourth quarter rally. Shannon McCarney topped the Falcons with 15 points, 11 of where came at the foul line while Kristi DeMiceli and Jamie Lukos added 11 points each. The Vikings were led by Erin Murphy and Gloria Pinck who hit the bucket with 14 points apiece while Lauren Cimasko finished with a dozen points and Chrissy Licurzi tossed nine into the basket.
Jent nets 20 in Spartans rout of Cougars (Sparta 57 - Kittatinny 25)
Sparta led all the way in defeating Kittatinny 57-25 on Friday in Hampton. The Spartans jumped out to an 18-6 lead after eight minutes and went on a 20-6 run following intermission to ice the decision. Meghan Jent was top gun for the Spartans, pumping 21 through the iron including 10 in the third quarter outburst. Ali Cummings netted a team-high 10 points for the Cougars. Diana Dilworth and Brittany Keil chipped in with nine points apeice.
Holcomb's 20 points spark Mustangs past Crimson (Sussex Tech 45 - Morristown-Beard 30))
Kori Holcomb was on target as she tossed a game-high 20 points through the twine to spark Sussex Tech to a 45-30 win over Morristown-Beard on Friday. Sussex Teh went on a 21-6 run in the third quarter to snap an 11-11 stalemate at intermission. On Tuesday, the Mustangs defeated Lacordaire Academy from Upper Montclair by a scoe of 43-30 as Jess Gardepe finished with 14 points and her sister Katelyn granned a game-high 19 records. Trailing 30-25 entering the fourth quarter, the Mustangs went on an 18-0 run down the stretch as Amanda Zweig bombed a pair of three-pointers through the twine to ignite the outburst and finished with 11 points.

Kally's career-high 29 scalps Chiefs (High Point 57 - Hopatcong 19)
Nicole Kelly hit the hoop for a career-high 29 points to power High Point to a 57-19 win over Hopatcong in Wantage on Thursday. The Wildcats led 8-2 after eight minutes and increased their margin to 27-8 by halftime. Kelly netted a dozen of her points in the third quarter when High Point went on a 16-5 run to ice their second victory of the season against four setbacks. Hopatcong dropped to 1-4.
Hern's 32 points power Rangers past Chiefs (Wallkill Valley 64 - Hopatcong 47)

Antoinette Battisti topped all scorers, popping 20 points into the basket while Stephanie Hern addede 15. Amber Gardocki finished with 14 points, 10 of which came during the Rangers' second half spurt.
Vikings 1st quarter surge stymies Patriots (Vernon 51 - Lenape Valley 34)
Vernon jumped out to a 17-8 lead by the end of the opening quarter and the Vikings went on to post a 51-34 victory over Lenape Valley. Krissy Licursi and Gloria Pinck shared team-high scoring honors for the Vikings, scoring 13 points apiece. Erin Murphy contributed 11 points, including a trio of treys while Lauren Cimasko dented the cords with 10 points in the well-balanced Viking attack. Maggie Grzelak led LVR in scoring as she deposited a dozen points into the basket.
Dilworth's 14 spark Spartans(Sparta 50 - Newton 31)
Sparta rolled to its fifth victory in six games, defeating Newton 50-31 as Diana Dilworth popped eight of game-high 14 points through the twine in the fourth quarter when the Lady Spartans went on a 16-7 run to ice the decision. Melissa Yeagley chipped in with 13 points, Brittany Keil added 10 with Meaghan Jent contributing eight points.
Holcomb's 20 points spark Mustangs past Crimson (Jefferson 48 - Pope John 38)
Jefferson defeated Pope John 48-38 as Dawn Gilchrist led the Falcons with nine points, including a pair of treys in the final four minutes of the game. Erin Ackerson, Kristi DeMiceli, Jamie Lukos and Shannon McCarney netted eight points apiece in the Falcons well-balanced scoring effort. Jo Ellen Fitzgibbons topped the Lions scoring column with a dozen points with Erin Teeling chipping in with 10 points.

Girls Basketball Report for Week of January 1, 2001

Sussex Tech wins NJVS Holiday Tournament

Jess and Katelyn Gardepe turned in double-double performances as she sparked Sussex Tech to an easy 44-26 victory over Warren Tech in the championship game of the New Jersey Vocational School Holiday Tournament contested on the campus of Middlesex County Vo-Tech in East Brunswick. The win raised the Mustangs record to 2-2 while Warren Tech dropped to 3-1.
Warren Tech opened up a 12-8 lead over the first eight minutes before the Mustangs went on a roll bridging the second and third quarters with an 18-6 run that moved them into a 26-18 lead entering the final quarter. Jess Gardepe proceeded to score eight of game total of 10 points in the fourth quarter to fuel an 18-8 run by the Mustangs that iced the decision. She also pulled down 14 rebounds while her sister Katelyn pumped a game-high 18 points through the iron and grabbed 16 boards. Amanda Zweig tossed eight points through the twine in a supporting role.
Wallkill Valley rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Spring Valley (NY) in the championbship game of the Ranger Holiday Tournament played in Hardyston. Wallkill Valley led 12-8 after one quarter and added a point to its lead in the second to come to the halftime break with a 20-13 lead. Following the intermission, Spring Valley took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers 19-6 to forge into a 32-26 lead entering the fourth quarter. Wallkill Valley regained control at crunch time, going on a 20-2 run down the stretch to pull out its second "W" in four decisions.
Stephanie Hern continued to be the top gun for the Rangers, hitting the hoop with a game-high 14 points while Antoinette Battisti contributed nine points to the cause.
Pope John edged Mount Pocono (PA) in the consolation game of the Lady Mountie Holiday Tournament played in Stroudsburg, PA on Thursday. The Lions pulled out a 57-56 victory in overtime as Jen Behagg and Ashleigh O'Rourke netted four points apiece in the OT period. O'Rourke tallied a career-high 20 points and completed a double-double effort by puling down 10 rebounds. Behagg finished with 14 points and dished off eight assists.
Jo Ellen Fitzgibbon, who finished with four points, nailed a turnaround jumper with two seconds remaining on the game clock, to send the outcome to overtime. Erin Teeling made it three Lions in double figures when she finished with 15 points.
Sparta suffered its first setback when St. Peter's of New York registered a 50-42 victory over the Spartans in the prestigious Mendham Holiday Tournament on Thursday. St. Peter's opened up a 30-15 lead by halftime before the Spartans went on a 17-3 run in the third quarter to cut the lead to a single point at 33-32 entering the final eight minutes of action. Melissa Yeagley ignited the third quarter rally as she bombed a trio of treys through the hoop. She finished with 21 points, including five three-pointers while Meghan Jent flipped nine points into the basket.
Lenape Valley could find the basket as the Lady Patriots connected on a mere 6 of 47 shots from the field in dropping a 38-22 decision to Mount Olive in the championship game of the Marauders Holiday Tournament. Lauren Brunt was the one bright spot for the Lady Patriots, hitting the hoop for eight points and grabbing eight boards.
In the consolation game, High Point gained its first victory of the season when the Wildcats defeated Hackettstown 45-34. Nicole Kelly ignited a 14-2 run by the Wildcats in the third quarter and led High Point in scoring with an 11-point effort. Meghan Radimer and Nora Swanson added 10 points apiece.
Newton dropped a 57-49 verdict to Delaware Valley in the title game of the North Warren Holiday Tournament played in Blairstown on Thursday. Newton opened up a 14-7 lead and held a one point advantage at 35-34 entering the fourth quarter. Delaware Valley took control at crunch time to pull out its third win in four outings while the Braves dropped to 4-2.
In the battle for third place Vernon defeated North Warren 48-39 thanks to a 15-3 run by the Vikings in the second quarter. Lauren Cimasko netted six of her team-high points in the second quarter outburst and hauled down seven rebounds. Gloria Pinck chipped in with nine points and six rebounds while Michele Barone tallied eight points and dished off four assists.

Girls Basketball Report for Week of December 25, 2000

Hern becomes 1st Ranger to surpass 1,000 point plateau (Wallkill Valley 54 - Vernon 36)
Wallkill Valley posted its first victory of the season defeating Vernon 54-36 on Thursday. With 4 minutes, 57 seconds remaining until intermission, senior Stephanie Hern became the first Wallkill Valley girl basketball player to reach the 1,000 point plateau in career scoring. A 5-10 guard, she dropped a reverse layup through the twine to reach the prestigious mark and went on to finish with a game-high 20 points as she converted 6 of 9 opportunities at the charity stripe. The Rangers edged out to an 8-7 lead after eight minutes and upped the margin to 21-16 by the halftime break. Fueled by eight points from Hern, the Rangers went on a 22-11 run in the third quarter to lock up the victory. Antoinette Battisti pumped 7 of her 14 points through the iron in the third quarter. Erin Murphy led the Vikings with 11 points as Vernon dropped its first decision after two victories to start the season.
Blanos propels Chiefs to first victory (Hopatcong 43 - Lenape Valley 34)
Krystal Blanos hit the hoop for a game-high 15 points, including a perfect 7 for 7 at the charity stripe as she spurred Hopatcong to its first "W" of the 2000-2001 campaign in defeating Lenape Valley 43-34. The score was deadlocked at 13-13 entering the second quarter when Blanos netted six points to ignite a 14-6 run that moved the Chiefs into a 27-19 lead by halftime. Katie Quigly chipped in with nine points for the Vikings while Nann Kenific topped the Lady Patriots, denting the cords with nine points.
Gilchrist pumps 19 through iron to spark Falcons (Jefferson 50 - Kittatinny 37)
Dawn Gilchrist flipped a game-high 19 points into the basket to lead Jefferson to a 50-37 victory over Kittatinny on Thursday. Jefferson led 13-6 after one quarter but the Cougars, led by Ali Cummins who finished with a dozen points, rallied to move into a 24-22 lead by halftime. Led by Shannon McCarney who netted 9 of her game-total of 15 points, Jefferson edged back in front 34-33 by the end of the third quarter and the Falcons went on a 16-4 run down the stretch to ice their third straight decision of the season.
Lytle, Teeling combine to knock Newton from unbeaten ranks (Pope John 56 - Newton 41)
Kristen Lytle and Erin Teeling combined for 28 points to lead Pope John to a 56-41 victory over Newton in a clash of unbeaten SCIL squads on Thursday in Sparta. Pope John moved out to a 14-11 lead after eight minutes and the Lions followed with a 10-5 run in the second quarter to open up a 24-16 lead at halftime. Lytle finished with a game-high points while Teeling dominated under the boards, chipping in with 13 points and hauling down eight rebounds. In the backcourt, Jen Behagg popped nine points through the hoop, dished off nine assists and picked off six steals in a strong effort. Liz Scala topped the Braves scoring, neting 11 points.
Gilchrist pumps 19 through iron to spark Falcons (Sparta 72 - High Point 39)
Sparta remained unbeaten after four games as the Lady Spartans burst out to a 30-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 50-19 at halftime on the way to routing winless High Point 72-39. Melissa Yeagley was top gun on the attack, hitting the hoop with 22 points, 11 of which keyed the first quarter explosion. Megan Jent chipped in with a 17-point effort, eight of which tickled the twine in the opening quarter while sophomore Brittany Keil finished with 18 points.

Jefferson 51 - Lenape Valley 30
Three Falcons reached double figures as Jefferson opened the 2000-2001 girls basketball campaign with a 51-30 win over Lenape Valley on Friday in Stanhope. The Falcons jumped out to a 15-6 lead after eight minutes of action and led 30-18 when the teams exited the hardwood for the halftime break. Shannon McCarney was top gun for the Falcons, pouring a game-19 points through the twine. Erin Ackerson and Dawn Gilchrist chopped in with 11 points apiece. Lauren Brunt led the Patriots in scoring as she tickled the twine with 13 points, converting 8 of 10 opportunities at the charity stripe.
Newton 66 - Walkill Valley 36
Kaitlyn Davey tickled the twine with a game-high 20 points and pulled down four rebounds to power Newton to a 66-36 win over Wallkill Valley in Newton on Friday. The Braves edged in front 14-12 by the end of the opening quarter and upped their advantage to 27-16 by halftime. Davey hit the hoop for eight points in the third quarter as the Braves went on a 19-9 run to ice the decision. Alexis Johnson chipped in with a 17-point scoring effort, dished off nine assists and picked off five steals. Erica Dardaginis made it a trio of Braves in double figures as she netted 11 points and hauled down nine rebounds. Stephanie Hern led the Rangers as she pumped 14 points through the iron.
Pope John 55 - Kittatinny 35
Jen Behagg came close to recording a triple double as she sparked Pope John to a 55-35 victory over Kittatinny on Friday in a game played in Sparta. Behagg popped 13 points through the rim, dished off nine assists and grabbed nine rebounds. The Lions jumped out to a 20-6 lead by the conclusion of the opening quarter before Behagg tickled the twine with seven points in the second quarter as Pope John built up a 35-14 lead by intermission. Kristen Lytle netted a game-high 16 points for Pope John with Erin Teeling flipping a dozen points through the hoop. Noelle Thibault led Kittatinny with a 12-point effort.
Sparta 60 - Hopatcong 20
Sparta opened the 2000-2001 season with an explosion, bursting out to an 18-2 lead over the first eight minutes as Melissa Yeagley dented the cords with eight of game total of 10 points. The defending champions produced a balanced scoring attack as Meghan Jent pumped a dozen points through the iron, Olivia Kell chipped in with a 10-point effort, Jackie Hooper tossed nine through the twine and Diana Dilworth added seven points. Krystal Blanos netted 10 points for Hopatcong.
Vernon 33 - High Point 19
In the girls basketball opener played in Vernon on Friday, Gloria Pinck bombed a trio of three-pointers through the hoop to accumulate a game-high 13 points as the Vikings defeated High Point 33-19. Vernon opened up a 10-5 lead by the end of the opening quarter and surged to a 25-10 advantage by halftime. Lauren Cimasko tossed a dozen points into the basket in a supporting role. Meghan Radimer netted six points to top the Wildcats.
