Murch 3-hitter cages Cougars

Eric Murch went the distance, scattering three hits as he pitched High Point to an 8-2 victory over High Point in an SCIL diamond contest played in Wantage on Wednesday. The win was the 12th of the season against 10 setbacks for the Wildcats while Murch upped his mound mark to 4-2.
High Point pushed a pair of runs across the plate in both the first and second innings and never trailing. Joe Festa went 3 for 4 with two singles and a double as he scored twice. Westerfield singled twice in two official plate appearances, knocking in three runs and scoring twice. Brad Szatkiewicz legged out a pair of two-baggers while Joe Fricchione and Keith MacLean chipped in with doubles.
On Saturday, the Wildcats blasted Middletown 16-4 in a non-conference contest played in the State of New York. Junior southpaw Steve Fox upped his record to 2-1 as he scattered five singles. Fest led the attack, connecting for a single and two doubles while driving in four runs. Szathiewicz went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a pair of singles as he scored three times and drove in a pair of runs. Bruce Russell also legged out a pair of two-baggers.
In SCIL boys tennis, Kittatinny defeated the Wildcats 4-1 as High Point averted a shutout when its top player Justin Cook held on to defeat Eric Ferriere 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at first singles.
Morristown toppled High Point 6-1 in a non-conference softball game as Kate Ferguson delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth as the Wildcats finished their season with a 7-15 overall record.

Wildcats knock Newton from unbeaten ranks

High Point set the stage quickly, pushing four runs across the plate in the top of the first as the Wildcats went on to knock Newton from the ranks of the unbeaten, inflicting an 8-6 setback on the Braves on Thursday at Memory Park in Newton.
Brad Szatkiewicz keyed the first inning uprising with an RBI single that was aided by a pair of Braves' errors. The Wildcats scored three more runs in the top of the sixth on three straight walks with the bases loaded. Joe Festa and Jon Westerfield both connected for a pair of singles as the Wildcats collected seven hits. Eric Murch picked up the win on the mound.
Justin Cook is High Point's top player and in that position, he led by example as the Wildcats defeated Newton 3-2 in an SCIL boys tennis played at the Merriam Avenue School in Newton on Thursday. Cook coasted to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jason Harned in the first singles slot and Dan Scheider rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win at second singles against Chris Lloyd. At third singles, Mike Hoffmann dropped a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 decision to Mike Savino.
High Point salvaged the crucial third point in the first doubles confrontation. The Wildcats top tandem of Matt Lock and Mark Zaky battled to a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Scott Allenspach and Val Carlon. At second doubles, the duo of Brad Bolte and Ken Karnas dropped a similar 7-5, 7-5 decision to the Braves' Mike DePue and James Spadola.
In an SCIL softball encounter on Thursday in Wantage, High Point routed Newton 15-5 in a game called after four and half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. The victory was the sixth of the season for the Wildcats who have lost 13 times.
Kayla Vandergroef was top gun on the attack, going 3 for 4 as she knocked in three runs and scored twice. In the fourth, Vanderhroef keyed a seven-run uprising with a two-run double. Meg Gardner tripled in three runs and Christina Seck singled three times, plating three run.
Jessica Abbott recorded her sixth win of the season as she scattered three singles.

Wildcats honored as 2000 SCIL Fall Sports All Stars

Josh Aikens (Boys Soccer), Scott Clausen (Boys Soccer), Heather DeGroot (Field Hockey), Katie Ferguson (Field Hockey),Colleen Gill (Field Hockey) Tiffany Heineman (Girls Tennis), Nicole Kelly (Girls Soccer), Chelsea Litichevsky (High Point), Meghan Radimer (Girls Soccer), Mitar Rudanovic (Football) and Jason Salvador (Boys Cross Country) turned in outstanding efforts during the Fall sports season and were selected to the SCIL All Star First Teams in their respective sports.
High Point was the 2000 SCIL Sportsmanship Award Winner in field hockey and shared the honor with Wallkill Valley in boys cross country.

Wildcat sports highlights for week of January 22, 2001

Rudanovic pins in 18 seconds

High Point utilized various pinning combinations to roll to a 50-22 victory over Sparta in an SCIL matchup on Monday. The win upped the Wildcats record to 7-3-1 while the Spartans dropped to 7-4.
Steve Paluzzi got the Wildcats off and running when he packed up Chris DeBlock one minute into the first period of the opening 103-pound bout. Shane Swarts followed with a 17-0 technical fall over Scott Lotosky with 24 seconds remaining in the middle period of the 112 pound match. At 125 pounds, it took Kyle Hunsicker only 37 seconds to show Steve Swentzel the gym lights and Tony Perdisaff flattened Tim Lotosky 16 seconds into the middle period of the meeting of 140 pounders.
High Point locked up the team victory with back-to-back-to-back first period falls from 152 through 171. Tom Perry started the run when he wrapped up Andrew VanDillon after 1 minute, 12 seconds had elapsed and John Maciag needed only 34 ticks of the clock to pin Randy Flores. Joe Fricchione concluded the run when he decked Alex Greco with 17 seconds remaining in the opening period at 171 pounds.
Eric Wesolowski registered a 4-0 decision over Kevin Quinn at 189 pounds and then lightning struck as Mitar Rudanovic concluded the competition by putting Eric Handon on his back 18 seconds into the heavyweight finale.
In girls basketball, High Point lost to Kittatinny 47-34 on Thursday to drop to a 2-10 overall record. Tammy Thom popped a team-high seven points into the basket and grabbed nine rebounds. On Tuesday, the Wildcats fell to Pope John by a score of 67-32. Thom again led High Point in scoring, popping 10 points into the basket.
In boys basketball action, the Wildcats dropped a low-scoring 32-30 decision to Kittatinny on Thursday. Shawn Ztanze led the Wildcats in scoring as he popped 10 points through the cords with Rob Dombroski chipping in with eight points.

Yodice goal spurs High Point to sectional title

Lindsay Yodice tallied the only goal of the game as Vernon edged Northern Valley at Demarest 1-0 on Saturday for the 2000 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey, Section 1, Group III field hockey championship. The victory upped the Vikings record to 13-6 as they won their first sectional title since 1997.
High Point advances to the Group III semifinals and will play North Jersey, Section 2 champion Warren Hills on Wednesday in Morristown with the match scheduled to start at 2:00 PM. Warren Hills won its sectional title by defeating Notre Dame 3-2. The winner of the semifinal matchup will compete for the NJSIAA Group III crown on the campus of The College of New Jersey on Sunday.
Yodice, who was chosen the Eastern Propoane/Sports Beat Player of the Week, netted the game-winning tally with 13 minutes, 19 seconds remaining on the game clock as she directed a penalty corner into the Norsemen's goal. Gabbi Platukis got her stick on the ball sent into play by Chelsea Litichevsky and pushed it to Yodice who flipped the ball over Demarest goalie Nicole Bure for her 12th goal of the campaign.
Goalie Katie Ferguson was outstanding between the pipes as she came up with 22 saves to post the shutout in the goal. It was her ninth shutout of the season as she lowered her goals-against average to 0.95 per game.
It was a team effort at the defensive end of the field with Janel Byma, Meg Garnder, Colleen Gill and Alia Short turning in strong performances in front of Ferguson.
"I am proud of the girls and what has been accomplished," said head coach Bev Keur who has guided the Vikings to four sectional titles during her tenure on the sidelines. "They realize that hard work in practice and playing as a team make good things happen."
Seeded No. 2, High Point advanced to the finals by defeating third-seeded West Morris 2-1 in overtime on a goal by Litichevsky off a corner six minutes into the OT period with Heather DeGroot picking up an assist. Brittany Currie scored with 5 minutes, 30 seconds left in regulation with an assist from Litichevsky to snap a scoreless stalemate and the Highlanders got on the board with 1 minute, 1 second remaining to send the outcome to overtime.
Ferguson came up with eight saves in the goal.

Wildcats ousted from sectionals in OT

High Point's quest for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey, Section 1, Group III crown in boys soccer came to an end in Fort Lee on Wednesday. The Wildcats battled the Bridgemen to a 1-1 standoff at the end of regulation before succumbing in double overtime to end the season with an 8-9-3 record.
Following a scoreless opening half, Scott Clausen got the Wildcats on the board in the second half while Jonathon Koby scored for Fort Lee. The Bridgemen scored twice in the first overtime period to open up a two goal advantage before Dustin Byrnes scored in the second OT frame to cut the deficit to one goal but the Wildcats could not close the gap before the final whistle. Josh Aikens picked up an assist for High Point.
In the goal, keeper Eric Murch came up with 15 saves.

Wildcat sports highlights for week of October 27, 2000

Wildcats qualify for Group III X/C championships

High Point turned in a strong effort, placing fifth in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group III boys cross country championships and qualified for the Group III championship race at Holmdel Park in Monmouth County on November 11. Competing at Garret Mountain in West Paterson on Saturday, Jason Salvador paced the Wildcats with an eighth place finish, turning in a time of 17:28.5. Teammate Scott Melanson finished 28th with a clocking of 18:40.9.
In field hockey, High Point dropped a 1-0 overtime match to Newton on Tuesday despite a strong effort between the pipes by goalie Katie Ferguson who came up with 23 saves.

Eby named 2000 Skier of the Year

NJSIAA honors Martin

High Point's Jake Eby has been chosen the 1999-2000 Straus Newspapers Skier of the Year by Sports In The Garden State's panel of coaches and media personnel. Eby, who sparked the Wildcats to the boys team title at the SCIL Ski Festival, was the top selection on the New Jersey Interscholastic Ski Racing Association's All State team. Ed Greenaway was chosen to the Third Team
In the girls competition, High Point made it a Wildcats sweep of the team titles at the SCIL Ski Festival while finishing the regular season scheduled with a perfect 36-0 mark. High Point skiers occupied four of the six slots on the Straus Newspapers Girls Ski All Stars squad. Tamsen Bolte, Jill Houghtaling, Kelly Martin and Amy Meisner were First Team selections while Kasey Phillips was picked for the Second Team and Nicole Loux made the Third Team.

Senior Kelly Martin was honored at the 7th Annual New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Luncheon held at The Pines Manor in Edison on May 7, 2000.

Meisner, Short honored as NJSIAA/ETS Scholar-Athlete

Seniors Amy Meisner and Christopher Short were named NJSIAA-ETS Scholar-Athletes. The awards have been presented for 16 years with the honorees ranking in the top 10% of their senior class while earning at least two varsity letters and demonstrating outstanding qualities of leadership, character and service with the school and community.
