Farruggia rallies to spur LVR to net win over Newton

Charlie Farruggia bounced back from losing the first set 6-0 to battle to 7-5, 7-5 wins over the next two sets and pull out a 3-2 win for Lenape Valley over Newton in an SCIL tennis match played at the Merriam Avenue School in Newton on Wednesday. The win was the fifth against 13 setbacks for the Patriots while the Braves dropped to 6-11.
Daniel Mintz led by example as the Patriots top player rolled to a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Chris Lloyd in the first singles slot. At second doubles, the LVR duo of Tom Joiner and Dominic Rupprecht coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Joe Brill and Mike DePue.
Lenape Valley surprised powerful Newton by a 5-3 score in a SCIL baseball game on Wednesday. Joe Dolce stopped the Braves, who dropped to 21-2, on three hits. Joe Egan and Jack Sylvester both legged out a pair of two-baggers while Jeff Brown and Bill Flynn singled twice as the Patriots collected 10 hits.
Roxbury edged the Patriots 4-3 in a non-conference softball encounter contested in Succasunna on Tuesday. The Gaels edged in front 3-0 by the end of the fourth inning before the Patriots got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth keyed by an RBI double by Nyla Batts and scored once in the seventh but could not close the gap. Lauren Brunt knocked in a pair of runs and scored once while Keri Gomez scored twice to account for all the LVR tallies.
In golf, the Patriots lost a 159-193 decision to Newton in a SCIL match played at the Farmstead Country Club on Wednesday. Bill Koellhoffer carded the low nine-hole round of 44 over the par 33 course while Charloes Bauer and Jeff Chang toured the nine holes in 49 strokes apiece. Jeff Rugg fired a 51, Kevin Kresker had a 54 and Chris Tonga finished with a 55.

Frosh hurls 1st shutout

Frosh Caitlin Roach registered her first varsity shutout over seven innings when she blanked HighPoint 5-0 in an SCIL softball game played in Stanhope on Wednesday. The win was the 12th of the season for Roach who has lost seven times. She scattered four singles and struck out three while her teammates played errorless ball behind her.
Melissa Kaiser singled twice and doubled once, driving in a run in four official plate appearances while Lauren Brunt singled three times in three at bats, knocking in a run. Lisa Bencivenga and Kaiser connected for RBI doubles in the bottom of the first when the Patriots pushed a pair of runs across the plate.
Lenape Valley defeated Sussex Tech 198-215 as the Patriots recorded their fifth win of the golf campaign against 14 losses. Bill Koellhoffer carded the low nine-hole round of 41 for LVR while Kevin Kresker toured the nine holes over the par 36 course at Bowling Green in 48 strokes. Jeff Rugg shot a 53 and Chris Tonga completed the team scoring in the low four of six rounds with a 56. Jeff Change had a 57 and Gabrielle Kowalski was the other LVR player on the course.
Leading 3-1 after four innings, the Patriots could not extinguish a late Pope John rally, falling to the Lions 14-4 in an SCIL baseball game played in Stanhope on Thursday. The Patriot batting order collected seven hits. Joe Egan had two of the hits, including a solo homer in the seventh.
Nina Apgar singled three times and Amanda Gartland connected for a pair of singles but Lenape Valley had its five-game winning streak snapped on Thursday when Pope John pulled out a 6-5 win in the bottom of the ninth.

Patriot Sports Highlights for Week ending May 6, 2001

LVR 7th inning rally sinks Vikings

Lenape Valley exploded with four runs in the top of the seventh to pull out a 5-1 victory over Vernon in a Sussex County Interscholastic League softball game played on Friday in Vernon. The win upped the Patriots overall record to 9-7 while the Vikings dropped to 6-11.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, the Patriots capitalized on three Viking errors to push four runs across the plate. Caitlin Roach picked up the "W" on the mound as she scattered a pair of hits. Fanned six and walked only two in going the distance.
Lenape Valley defeated Sussex Tech 173-213 in a golf match played over the par 33 Valley Course at the Farmstead Country Club on Thursday. Kevin Kresker and Jeff Rugg led the Patriots, carding nine-hole scores of 41 while Bill Koelhoffer toured the course in 45 strokes. Chris Tango completed the LVR team score in the low four of six format, posting a round of 46. Adam Kanter shot a 51 and Charles Bauer finished with a 52.
LVR won the boys division of a dual track & field meet with Newton as the Patriots built up a 78-53 advantage as Andre Bogle sprinted to a trio of first place finishes. He won the 100 (11.3), 200 (23.3) and 400 (52.6) meter dashes. His teammate Arran Seiler finished first in the 1600 (5:13.1) and 3200 (11:31) meter runs while Jonn Wozniak won the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.2 seconds and cleared the bar at 5-8 to win the high jump competition.
Other Patriot winners were Stephen Smith in the 800 meter run (2:19.0) and Brian Ballat with a throw of 103-11 in the discus.
