SCIL Wrestling Week of February 12, 2001 |
| Kittatinny extended its SCIL winning streak to 29 straight as the Cougars defeated High Point 47-22 to claim their third straight SCIL crown and fourth overall, having won for the first time in 1981. After High Point opened up a 16-6 lead after four matches, the Cougars turned the tables, rolling off nine straight wins to lock up the title under head coach John Gill. Doug Morrow ignited the run when he decked Trevor Annuzzi 1 minute, 8 seconds into the opening round of the 130-pound bout. Mike Weber made it back-to-back falls at 135 pounds, Mike Celi posted a 5-1 decision over Tony Perdisatt and Mike Mabel was awarded a forfeit "W" at 145-pounds. Bryant Wanamaker (152) and Matt Conallon (160) put together major decisions while Dan Curtin recorded a third period pin at 171 pounds. Josh Roe (189) and Joe Crawn (215) added back-to-back decisions to complete the streak. The loss dropped the Wildcats into third place. |
| Jefferson took undisputed possession of the runnerup slot by defeating Wallkill Valley 44-26. The Falcons picked up 24 points with forfeit wins awarded to Jeremiah Lancaster (140), Erik Mount (145), Matt Christ (160) and Tony Palombi (171). Tim Klemm locked up the team victory when he shoed Bill Hannon the gym lights 28 seconds into the 215-pound bout. |
| Lenape Valley and Newton entered their season-ending matchup tied for fourth place. When the whistle blew, the teams were still tied for fourth place in the team standings after battling to a 33-33 deadlock. The Patriots trailed by three going into the heavyweight finale that was deadlocked at 4-4 at the end of regulation. LVR's Dan Truppo took the Braves' Mike Haggerty to the mat for two-takedown points and a 6-4 triumph that knotted the team score. |
| Vernon and Sparta were tied at 33-33 with one bout remaining. The Vikings pulled out a 39-33 victory when Bernie O'Brien pinnedMatt Skoruopka 36 seconds into the bout to give Vernon the win and a share of a three-way tie for sixth place in the standings. |

| Sparta rallied to a 39-34 win over Jefferson when Tom Alfsen edged Steve Soares 9-7 in the heavyweight finale. Chris DeBlock ifnited the Spartans when he wrapped up Corey Farina 1 minute, 3 seconds into the opening period of the 103-pound bout as Sparta jumped out to a 25-6 lead by winning five of the first six bouts. |
| Kittatinny remained unbeaten in SCIL competition by routing Newton 61-6 as the Cougars won 12 of the 14 bouts starting at 103-pounds when Mike Gummerson posted a 10-0 major decision over Matt Moorman. Matt Valenti followed with an 18-1 technical fall over Trevor Braxton, a 1st team SCIL selection last season, as the second period of the 112-pound bout came to a close. |
| Lenape Valley edged Wallkill Valley 38-34 when Mark Marotta registered a 10-5 decision over Jeff Smith in the 215-pound bracket to lock up the team win. Vinny Kourt (130), Ron Widmaier (145) and Joe Olivo (152) posted pins for the Patriots. |

| Bob Poggi recorded his 200th career win in his 15th season as head coach at Lenape Valley when the Patriots defeated Warren Hills in a non-league matchup contested at Belvidere High School. LVR locked up the historic victory when Mark Marotta decked Scott Dubiel with nine seconds left in the opening period of the 215-pound bout. |
| Pope John rallied from 16-point deficit with three bouts remaining to tie Hackettstown 36-36 in a non-league encounter. Joe Meshnik started the Lions' stretch run by decking Greg Varina with 31 seconds left in the middle period of the 189-pound matchup. Pat Bennett followed with an 11-4 decision over Matt Leitner at 215 pounds and heavyweight Devn Perez quickly knotted the team score when he packed Jamie Becker 53 seconds into the final bout. |
| Wallkill Valley routed Bridgewater-Raritan 47-27 with the Rangers triumph aided by quick back-to-back pins by Brian Burdzy in 34 seconds at 112-pounds and Ricky Zimmerer with a 21 second fall in the 119-pound weight bracket. Chris DePietri added a 43 second pin in the 145-pound bout. |

| High Point utilized various pinning combinations to roll to a 50-22 victory
over Sparta in an SCIL matchup on Monday. The win upped the Wildcats record to 7-3-1 while the Spartans dropped
to 7-4. Steve Paluzzi got the Wildcats off and running when he packed up Chris DeBlock one minute into the first period of the opening 103-pound bout. Shane Swarts followed with a 17-0 technical fall over Scott Lotosky with 24 seconds remaining in the middle period of the 112 pound match. At 125 pounds, it took Kyle Hunsicker only 37 seconds to show Steve Swentzel the gym lights and Tony Perdisaff flattened Tim Lotosky 16 seconds into the middle period of the meeting of 140 pounders. High Point locked up the team victory with back-to-back-to-back first period falls from 152 through 171. Tom Perry started the run when he wrapped up Andrew VanDillon after 1 minute, 12 seconds had elapsed and John Maciag needed only 34 ticks of the clock to pin Randy Flores. Joe Fricchione concluded the run when he decked Alex Greco with 17 seconds remaining in the opening period at 171 pounds. Eric Wesolowski registered a 4-0 decision over Kevin Quinn at 189 pounds and then lightning struck as Mitar Rudanovic concluded the competition by putting Eric Handon on his back 18 seconds into the heavyweight finale. |
| Pope John claimed its second "W" in wrestling on Tuesday when
the Lions defeated Sussex Tech 51-28. Trailing 28-21, the Lions produced five straight falls in the upper weight
classes to record the win. Anthony Russo ignited the run at 160 pins when he packed up Charle Wohleb with two second
remaining in the opening period. Chris Cufrenstein followed with another first period fall, showing Joe Hickey
the gym lights with 36 seconds left before the period ended. Joe Meshnick continued the surge, pinning Adam Secola
with one second remaining in the battle of 189 pounders. Brandon Perez needed only 40 seconds to wrap up Brandon
Van Luvender at 215 pounds and Devin Perez closed out the match by pinning Dan Miller 54 seconds into the heavyweight
finale. Mike Palma delivered the first fall for the Lions at 135 pounds when he decked Chris Bannon in the second period. Tom Rady posted an 8-2 decision over Don VonDeMoere at 145 pounds while Dave Meshnick (130) and Steve Warther (140) were awarded forfeit victories. |
| Wallkill Valley squeaked out a 38-37 win over Sparta in an SCIL wrestling
matchup held Wednesday in Sparta. Brian Burdzy got the Rangers on the board when he posted a 13-4 major decision
over Scott Lotosky at 112 pounds and Jon Mankovich added a 19-6 major decision over Steve Swentzel in a meeting
of 125 pounders. At 130 pounds, Charlie Pinto executed Nehar Menon in a quick 32 seconds. Trailing 37-14 with four bouts remaining, the Rangers produced the needed maximum 24 points as Bill Hannon planred Kevin Quinn with 15 seconds left in the second period of the 171 pound bout. Chris Skretkowicz made short work of Alex Greco, putting the Spartan 189 pounder on his back 61 seconds into the match and James Yurchak picked up a forfeit win at 215 pounds to narrow the gap to 37-32. Jeff won by a disqualification over Tom Alfsen 30 seconds into the heavyweight finale and the Ramngers had their seventh "W" in 11 outings. |

| Kittatinny jumped out to a 31-0 and went on to defeat Phillipsburg 37-28 on Thursday for what was arguably the biggest victory in Cougar mat history. Mike Gummerson picked up six team points when he was awarded a forfeit win at 103. Matt Valenti (112), Joe Zdaniewicz (119) and Ken Fei (125) followed with back-to-back-to-back pins, Doug Morrow (130) posted a major decision and Mike Weber (135) won by a decision. The Cougars clinched the team win when Brad Bischoff (215) and Joe Crawn (HWT) added decisions. |
| High Point successfully defended its crown in the 5th Annual Patriot Duals contested at North Warren Regional High School in Blairstown on Saturday. Kevin Veltri (119), John Maciag (160) and Joe Fricchione (171) posted three wins apiece to pacre the Wildcats who detaed West Milford 45-28 in the championship round. Fricchione stole the individual spotlight, posting pins in all three of his bouts. |
| Wallkill Valley also competed in the Patriot Duals, defeating North Warren (48-36) and Millburn (41-33) but losing to Pequannock (36-35). Jon Mankovich (125), Charlie Pinto (135), Chris DiPietri (140), Mike Graziano (152) and Chris Skretkowicz (189) posted three wins apiece for the Rangers. |
| Sparta claimed three victories in the Mount Olive Quad when the Spartans defeated Dover (39-34), Mount Olive (36-22) and Pope John (45-22). Chris DeBlock got Sparta off on the winning track each time in the opening 103 pound weight class, posting a decision, technical fall and pin. Matt Stoppay (119) added three wins as did Jim Miller (130) and Mike Stoppay (145). |

third in the Patriot's Christmas Wrestling Tournament contested last Wednesday in Stanhope. Hopatcong, which also
had four champions, placed second to Perth Amboy. |

| Ciccone, Lijo, Nicolicchia, Wilson post gold medal efforts in Hopatcong Invitational |
| Nick Ciccone, Jaime Lijo, Anthony Nicolicchia and Chris Wilson turned in gold medal performances that sparked the Chiefs to a runnerup team finish in the Hopatcong Invitational Wrestling Tournament that commenced the 2000-2001 scholastic wrestling campaign on Saturday. Ciccone posted an 8-3 decision over Cranford's Mike Carbone in the 152 title bout while Lijo, an NJSIAA Region I silver medalist last year, claimed the 112 pound crown by wrestling to a 5-0 decision over another Cranford grappler, Pat Daly. A freshman, Nicolicchia exploded on the varsity scene by winning the 103 pound championship with a 3-0 victory over Sparta's Chris DeBlock. At 130 pounds, Chris Wilson edged the Spartans' Jim Miller 1-0 in the finale while teammates Rich Smith (135) and Andrew DellaSalla (145) placed second with Wes McGoldrick (140), Matt Hill (160) and Andrew Finland (214) finishing in third place. |
| Sparta placed fifth in the eight-team field that was won by Warwick (PA). The Spartans only champion was sophomore Matt Stopay who won the 119 pound title with a 20-11 major decision over Warwick's Jessie Erick. Tom Alfsen finished second in the 215 pound competition with Mike Stoppay claiming the third place award at 145 pounds. |

| Kittatinny finished second in the prestigious Caldwell Tournament, trailing Brick Memorial while Paulsboro occupied third place. Senior Dan Curtin, who place second in last year's NJSIAA District III tournament, claimed the gold in the 189 pound weight division when he posted a 10-6 decision over Brett Jankos of Brick Memorial. Junior Matt Valenti, a two-time NJSIAA state placewinner, decked all three opponents to win win the 112-pound crown. Sophomore Bryant Wanamaker, burst on the varsity scene by pinning Eastern's John White for the 152-pound title. Doug Morrow picked up the silver medal in the 130 bracket while Mike Weber (135), Mike Mabel (145), Matt Connallon (160) and Travis Waldron (HWT) won consolation bracket bouts to finish in third place. |
| Goduto brothers spur Patriots to runnerup finish in Dover Tournament |
| Derrick and Len Goduto posted back-to-back gold medal performances to propel Lenape Valley to a second place finish in the Dover Tournament. Derrick posted a 9-3 decision over Glen Rock's Evan Gallacio to win the 119 pound bracket and Len followed with a 4-2 decision over another Panther grappler, Kevin O'Toole in the 125 pound finale. Joe Olivo decked Roxbury's D.J. Roman 26 seconds into the middle period of the 140 pound title bout and Chris Ressa picked up the gold at 152 pounds when he wrestled to a 16-6 major decision over Roxbury's T.J. Brady. Pat DeWald was runnerup at 135 pounds and Tom Prestia finished third in the heavyweight division. |
| Pope John's Palma and Warther win in Hanover Park Christmas Tournament |
| Pope John finished sixth out of eight teams in the Hanover Park Christmas Tournament but the Lions' Mike Palma and Steve Warther turned in back-to-back gold medal efforts. Palma decked Parsippany's James Luciano with 16 seconds left in the opening period of the 130 pound title match. Warther followed with an 11-6 decision over Pequannock's Brian May at 135 pounds. Wilt Renke was runnerup at 145 pounds and Devin Perez placed third in the heavyweight division. |
| Skretkowitz named Outstanding Wrestler in Morris Knolls Tournament |
| Wallkill Valley's defending NJSIAA state champion Chris Skretkowitz got off to a strong start as he began his senior campaign by capturing the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award at the Morris Knolls Tournament. The Rangers just missed claiming the team title as South Plainfield gained the crown by a score of 179 to 177.5 with Montville trailing in third place with 105 points. Skretkowicz showed Morris Hills' Jamie Smith the gym lights 1 minute, 8 seconds into the 189 pound championship bout. Jon Mankovich won the 125 pound title by pinning North Plainfield's at 1 minute, 17 seconds of the opening period and Charlie Pinto claimed the gold medal at 130 pounds when he won by injury default over South Plainfield's Dave Butrico. Mike Gazano was crowned the 152 pound champion after pinning South Plainfield's Mike Buteas with 25 seconds remaining in the middle period and heavyweight Jeff Smith won the last title when he decked North Plainfield's Nick Parlapanedis 55 seconds into the final period. Brian Burdzy (112), Bill Hannon (171) and James Yurchak (215) picked up second place awards. |
