Griffen named Braves gridiron coach |
| David Griffen has been named the head coach of the Newton High School football
team replacing Pete Contaldi who coached the Braves for the last three years. Contaldi led the Braves to a 5-5
record in 200 as they qualified for the post-season NJSIAA playoffs for the first time since 1991. Griffen is a graduate of Cortland State and has served as an assistant coach on the Braves staff for the last nine years. He has spent 26 years in assistant coaching roles, including three at Pope John after moving to New Jersey following stints at Hewlett, Oyster Bay and Ticonderoga High Schools in the State of New York. For the last four years, Griffen has been the Braves defensive coordinator and last year, Newton's defensive unit posted three shutouts. Overall, the Braves never lost by more than eight points during the 2000 campaign. |

Johnson hat trick sets SCIL record Alexis Johnson turned in a hat trick effort as she sparked Newton to a
6-0 rout of Jefferson in a Sussex County Interscholastic League field hockey match played in Newton. It was Johnson's
fifth hat trick of the campaign and she set a new SCIL single-season scoring record with 71 points, breaking the
old mark of 68 set by High Point's Lesley Dube in 1997. |
