Jay-Jay Ortega was perfect between the pipes as Pope John skated to a 4-0
victory over Hudson Catholic in a New Jersey Interscholastic Hockey League matchup contested at Skylands Ice World
in Hardyston. The win was the 15th for the Lions who have lost only four times.
Pope John burst out to a 4-0 lead in the initial 15 minutes and the outcome was never in doubt as Ortega turned
all 10 official shots on goal. Owen Bvater netted what proved to be the game-winning tally 1 minute, 40 seconds
into the game when he scored an unassisted goal. Vinnie Jacona made it 2-0 off assists from Dave Branning and Tom
Kurth with 4 minutes, 9 seconds ticked off the clock. John Alexander tallied back-to-back goals to up the margin
to four goals by the first intermission. Kris Deckenback assisted on both goals with Steve Williams picking up
an assist on the first tally. Williams netted the only goal of the middle period with Drew Moore getting an assist
while Jacona completed the scoring parade with an unassisted tally in the third period.
Liz Devine led all scorers, pumping 21 points through the iron as Pope John coasted to a 52-36 win over Wallkill
Valley on February 13. Kathryn Christiansen dumped 13 points into the basket with Caitlin Costaney contributing
11 to the Lions ninth "W" of the season.
Lions rally cages Falcons

Trailing 15-9 after eight minutes, Pope John rallied to defeat Jefferson
57-53 and deprive the Falcons of a berth in the NJSIAA post-season tournament. The win elevated the Lions overall
record to 11-7 and they sport a 9-6 record in the SCIL standings.
Mike Massey posted a double-double performance for the Lions, netting 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Chris
Bays fueled the Lions second-half rally when he popped 15 of his team-high 18 points through the twine. Mark Meehan
finished with a dozen points.
Caitlin Costaney fueled Pope John’s first half surge that opened up a 28-18 lead by halftime. Coastany netted 10
of her game-total of a dozen points in the first half as the Lions went on to defeat Vernon 49-23 in Sparta. Elizabeth
Devine tallied a team-high 13 points while Andrea Seledee converted two free throws, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished
off six assists. Missy Varda pulled down 11 boards and netted three points.
