Quintet of Lions named SCIL All Stars

Pope John finished the season with an overall record of 9-3, reaching the New Jersey State Interscholastic Parochial Group III championship game before falling to St. Joseph Regional/Montvale 54-29. Five Lions were named to the 2000 Sussex County Interscholastic League All Star First Team. Quarterback Ryan Newman (6-3, 195), running back Jeff Songile (5-11, 185), tight end Jon Weise (6-2, 225) and wide receiver George Peterson (5-7, 142), all seniors, were named to the offensive squad while sophomore Devin Perez, a lineman, was the only Lion named to the defensive unit. Matt Smart received honorable mention.

Songile sparkles in season-ending defeat

Jeff Songile turned in an outstanding effort in scholastic finale but Pope John fell to St. Joseph Regional/Montvale by a score of 54-29 in the championship game of the NNJSIAA Parochial Group III championship game played in Oradell. Songile toted the pigskin 18 times, churning out 183 yards rushing while scoring three TDs on runs of 65, 22 and 3 yards.
The Green Knights from Bergen County won their fourth state title in six years by jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and led 29-15 at intermission. St. Joseph accumulated 22 first downs, rushing for 385 yards and passing for 135 more while the Lions picked up 13 first downs and gained 270 yards on the ground but only 39 through the air.
"We're a young team," said head coach Vic Paternostro, "and we've had turnovers all season. It didn't help that three defensive regulars were out with injuries. When we had to stop them, we didn't."
Anthony Russo, who picked up 58 yards rushing on 3 carries, broke loose and raced 51 yards into the end zone for the final Lions' six-pointer of the season in the fourth quarter.

Songile sets new single-game rushing mark

SPARTA --- Yes, all you Pope John football watchers ... Jeff Songile is legit.
Lions coach Vic Paternostro says so and he should know because, not only did he watch Songile rush for a record 356 yards and score four touchdowns in Pope John's 35-27 SCIL victory over Kittatinny Saturday, he got to watch it again on tape because he wanted to count every single yard.
"Four hours ... we watched that tape for four hours," Paternostro said. "I think he was getting better the more I watched it, too."
Paternostro wanted to go over the tape carefully because not only was Songile's rushing yardage at Pope John record, it was also a Sussex County Interscholastic Football League record.
Former Pope John star Hank Trogani's 321 yards had been the previous standard at both Pope John and for the SCIL.
Four hours later, the yardage came out to 356 yards.
"To be honest about it, I was shocked when I was told after the game he had more than 300 yards," continued Paternostro. "Iknew he was having a good game, but not that good."
Songile (6-0, 172 pounds) scored on runs of 37, 9, 4 and 8 yards and carried the ball 34 times in the game.
"I tried to let him rest on defense and put somebody else in at his safety spot," added Paternostro. "But Kittatinny came back at us a little bit toward the end of the game and Songile was on my case to put him back in. He just wants to play."
Songile scored on his 37-yard run to open the scoring and Ryan Newman scored on a 1-yard plunge to give Pope John a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Songile's 9-yard run made it 20-7 but Kittatinny came back with two more TDs and took a one-point lead at halftime.
Songile gave the Lions the lead for good with a 4-yard TD run and, after Kittatinny pulled to within one point again, Songile scored the last TD of the game on an 8-yard run to give the Lions some breathing room. Songile didn't get much offensive time in last year since he was backing up Zack Ziegler, a two-year starter at tailback. He did, however, start at safety. Songile had a good summer for Paternostro this season and then followed that up by running well in scrimmages.
"He's a smart runner ... he won't knock you over over run past you, but he is tough to bring down ... he has a knack for breaking tackles," concluded Paternostro.
Songile got most of his yardage on sweeps around the right side behind the blocking of guard Steve Oroho, tackle Eric Vaughn and tight end Jon Wiese. There were times when Daren Perez was in at guard and there were times when fullbacks John Wesley, Bob Borny and Brandon Perez cleared the way for Songile.
"The game was close throughout, so none of his yardage came against second or third units," pointed out Paternostro. "It was a legitimate 356 yards."
Gained by a player who is legit, too

Paternostro's 34th campaign could be a challenge

By Bob Decker

SPARTA --- Vic Paternostro, entering his 34th season as Pope John's head football coach is finding out that patience is a word that is creeping into his vocabulary more and more every day.
Paternostro, who brings a 276-46-5 career record into the opener at Kittatinny, will put a young team out onto the field this year as graduation took away the bulk of last year's 7-3 team.
"We're hurting right now ... we got blasted in our last scrimmage and we're hurting," Paternostro said. "We have a young offensive line and a young defensive line and it's going to take some time before everything gets put together. If patience is a virtue as they say, then I' m going to be very virtuous this year."
If there is a flip side in dealing with such a young team, Paternostro says it's the players with whom he is dealing.
"These kids are super ... you couldn't ask for better attitudes," explained Paternostro. "I look forward to going out on the field and meeting these kids each day. I like talking with them, working with them ... they are one of the most attentive groups I've ever had. They are improving day by day and they will get better with time. But will we be the type of team we've had the past 10-12 years? I don't know about that. We came back and had real good practice the day after we got blown out in our last scrimmage. The potential is there, we're just going to have to do a lot of work on the field and off to get ready."
Paternostro hits the three teams that everybody is touting for the Sussex County Interscholastic League championship in Weeks 5, 6 and 7 of the season when the Lions play Sparta, Vernon and two-time defending champ Lenape Valley.
"We're going to have to be a lot better than, that's for sure," added Paternostro. "Heck ... we're going to have to be a lot better for Kittatinny, too."
Running Pope John's inverted wish bone attack this year will be quarterback Ryan Newman, who saw very little action last year. Tailback Jeff Songile is a first-time starter as are fullbacks John Wesley and Anthony Russo and flanker Matt Smart.
Tight end John Weiss, a three-year starter, is the only offensive lineman who saw any significant action last year. The split end will be either George Peterson or Adam Clark. Center Mike Barret is new; guards Steve Oroho and Tim Mangels are new; as are tackles Ken Day and Eric Vaughn.
On defense, it's more of the same with only linebacker Weiss and end Nick Maybunay the only starters back. Tackles Devon Perez, Joe Meshnick and Pat Sullivan are new. James Escobar is new at end.
Mike LaMastro and Mangles are first-time starters at outside linebacker and Rob borny will team with Weiss on the inside.
The secondary is all new with Alex MIller at safety and Matt Smart and either Eamon Conlin or Adam Clark at the corners.
"See what I mean?" said Paternostro. "Everybody is new."
Sophomore Brian Rogers is the placekicker but is getting some stiff competition from Tom Rady for kickoff duties. Evan Wehmeyer is the punter.
Paternostro sees Vernon and Sparta as being strong this season with Lenape Valley in the mix again. Although Paternostro doesn't see his young Pope John team contending, rival coaches are still keeping an eye out for the Lions because, as one coach said: "Vic always manages to come up with something over there no matter what type of team everybody else thinks he has."
Trouble is this year, it looks as if Paternostro needs more time to make that happen. And patience.
