Lotosky pitches, bats Spartans to opening day victory

Scott Lotosky had an impressive outing as he began his senior campaign pitching and batting Sparta to a 6-0 victory over Midland Park in a non-league baseball game played in Midland Park to open the 2004 diamond season.
Lotosky went the route, surrendering a pair of singles as he shut out the Panthers of the Bergen-Passaic Scholastic League. He whiffed nine batters and walked only two while aiding his own cause at the plate, connecting for a pair of singles in three official plate appearances, driving in a run. He was named the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com/Richards and Summers Player of the Week.
Dan Mastriani doubled in a run in the fifth and Ramadon Mehmedi also legged out a two-bagger. Bobby Ryan connected for a pair of singles, plating a run in the sixth.
Sparta blanked Pope John 5-0 in an SCIL boys' tennis match. Andrew Wang, the Spartans' ace of staff, breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Marco Guadagnini in the No. 1 singles confrontation. Patrick Castronovo coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Matt Carnisti at second singles and Logan Hirsch completed the straight set sweep of the singles competition with a 6-2, 6-3 win over John Aiello in the No. 3 singles slot.
Sparta dropped a 163-174 decision to Vernon in the opening match of the SCIL golf season at Lake Mohwak. Andy Kirschenbaum posted the low nine-hole round of 42 for the Spartans while Ryan Johnson and Peter VerDorn carded rounds of 43.

DeBlock notches 100th career "W"

Chris DeBlock captured the spotlight as Sparta but Newton edged the Spartans 44-28 in an SCIL wrestling match on February 14. DeBlock packed up and planted Eric Konzelman with 32 seconds remaining in the 145-pound bout to register his 100th careers win for the Spartans. DeBlock is a defending NJSIAA District III champion was third in Region I as a junior.
Vince Householder (125) and Mike Roselle (171) also produced pins for the Spartans.
Kelly Keil turned in a double-double effort to spur Sparta to a 51-23 rout of Kittatinny in an SCIL girls basketball game on February 10. Keil pulled down a dozen rebounds and netted 10 points while Kaitlyn Prol and Staci Rossi dumped nine points apiece into the basket,.
Sparta went on a 16-4 run down the stretch to rally to a 47-40 victory over Kittatinny in a boys' hoops contest in Hampton. Danny D'Angelo converted all eight of his free throw opportunities in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 14 points as the Spartans improved to 12-7. Eric Houtsma chipped in with a dozen points with Andrew Baker tossing 11 through the rim.

Baker excels in Spartan victory

Andrew Baker turned in a strong effort under the boards to spur Sparta to a 49-36 victory over High Point in an SCIL boys' basketball game played in Friday in Sparta. The win upped the Spartans overall record to 11-7 and they stand 10-5 in the SCIL.
Baker netted 17 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked five shots while Jake Rodgers finished with a career-high 11 points.
Sparta defeated Northern Valley/Demarest 47-26 in a non-league wrestling match on Saturday. Matt Henkes (103), Chris DeBlock (145), Andrew VanDillon (160), Mike Roselle (171) and Pete Zamirski (275) won by falls.
Eric Houtsma netted a team-high 16 points as Sparta edged Hopatcong 48-47 in an SCIL boys' basketball game. Danny D'Angelo finished with a dozen points as he bombed four three-pointers through the hoop to raise the Spartans overall record to 10-7.
LeighAnne Kevil and Lindsey Scott splashed to a pair of individual first place finishes to key Sparta's 87-81 win over the combined Wallkill Valley-Sussex Tech Tidal Waves. Kevin won the 50 and 100 freestyles while Scott finished first in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.
