Sparta Sports Highlights for Week Ending May 20, 2001

DeStefano executes perfect squeeze bunt

James DeStefano dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt that plated a run to highlight a five-run outburst by Sparta in the third inning as the Spartans went on to defeat Vernon 12-7 in a SCIL baseball game played Wednesday in Sparta. Brandon Williams drove in a pair of runs in the third while Dan Forrester and Geoff Wendell knocked in three runs apiece while Rob Fioretti homers as Sparta upped its overall record to 17-8. Wendell fanned five as he picked up the "W" in upping his record to 4-1.
Kathy Hennessy legged out a three-bagger for the Lady Spartans only hit in a 6-0 loss to Vernon on Wedneday in Vernon.
In boys tennis, Sparta routed Vernon 5-0 as the Spartans upped their overall record to 17-3. Chris Ciolino, the Spartans' top player, rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jon Wesche at first singles. Pat Castronovo coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ross Leth in the second singles slot while Fabio Vitake routed Justin Caggiano 6-2, 6-0 at third singles. In the doubles action, the Spartans top tandem of Greg Harms and Brian Morrissey blanked Brian Connolley and Eric Hunt 6-0, 6-0 while the No. 2 doubles tandem of Roman Dalichow and Ryan Malc came on strong to defeat Will DeLai and Pat Griffin 6-3, 6-0.
In a varsity boys lacrosse match on Friday, Sparta outshot Morristown 40-15 but dropped an 8-1 decision to the Colonials in Sparta. Martin Convey netted the only goal for the Spartans off an assist from Brad Wolf in the third quarter as Sparta dropped to 8-6.

Sparta Sports Highlights for Week Ending May 13, 2001

Wendell 4-hitter blanks Kittatinny

Geoff Wendell went the route, scattering four singles as he blanked Kittatinny 8-0 in an SCIL baseball game played in Hampton on Thursday. Wendell whiffed three as he upped his mound record to 3-1 and Sparta improved to 15-8 overall.
Max Greenberg supplied the offensive punch with a homer and double while the remainder of the batting order collected six singles.
Michel;le Krupina scattered three singles and whiffed nine batters as the Lady Spartans defeated Kittatinny 2-0 in Sparta on Thursday. Kaitlin Donahue went 2 for 3, scoring a run in the sixth on an error. Her sister Jen also went 2 for 3, connecting for an RBI single in the second inning.
Phil Marcellus fired the low round of 39 over the par 35 course at Lake Mohawk as Sparta coasted to a 164-180 win over Jefferson. Tim Gardiner and Kyle Helms carded rounds of 40 and Kyle Butler completed the team totals with a 45. Jake VerDorn toured the nine holes in 47 strokes and Billy Brauer finished with a 49 as the Spartans upped their record to 11-6.
In tennis, Sparta edged Kittatinny 3-2 by sweeping the doubles competition. The Spartans top tandem of Greg Harms and Brian Morrissey cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win against Mike Biron and Steve Dykstra. In the second doubles slot, Roman Dalichow and Ryan Malc coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Russell Gro=ve and Steve Pruser.
The team verdict was decided at first singles where Chris Ciolino ralled to defeat Eric Ferriere 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, (7-2).

Sparta Sports Highlights for Week Ending May 6, 2001

Hennessey hurls 0-hitter

Kathy Hennessey fired a no-hitter to propel Sparta to an 11-1 victory over Newton in an SCIL softball game played in Sparta on Thursday. Hennessey struck out 10 and walked one while her teammates committed a pair of errors.
Sophomore Michelle Krupna was top gun on the attack, blasting a pair of round-trippers that plated six runs. In the bottom of the first, she hammered a two-run homer and iced the decision with a grand slam homer in the sixth.
Shemjie Mehmedi singled three times, scoring three runs while Kaitlin Donahue singled twice and Hennessey legged out a double as the Lady Spartans accumulated 11 hits.
In boys tennis, Sparta routed Newton 5-0 as the Spartans extended their winning streak to 10 straight in upping their record to 13-1. Chris Ciolino upped his personal record to 15-2 when he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jason Harned in the No. 1 singles slot. Pat Castronovo coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 win against Chris Lloyd in the meeting of second singles players. Fabio Vitale posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Jon DeCamp in the third singles slot.
In the doubles action, the Spartans top tandem of Greg Harms and Brian Morrissey turned in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Thom Pasculli and James Spadola while the second duo of Roman Dolichow and Ryan Malc defeated Joe Brill and Mike Savino 6-4, 6-1.
Kyle Helms fired a one-over par 36 at Sky View, posting six pars, one birdie and two bogeys but his effort was not good enough as Pope John defeated the Spartans 147-159 in an SCIL golf match on Thursday. Kyle Butler finished with a 27, Tim Gardiner toured the nine holes in 42 strokes while Billy Brouer and Kevin Quinn carded nine-hole rounds of 44. Phil Marcellus shot a 48.

9th seeded Spartans claim sectional title

Sparta entered the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey, Section 1, Group III post-season playoffs as the No. 9 seed. On Friday, the Spartans posted a 10-8 victory over SCIL rival High Point, the No. 2 seed, to capture the school's first-ever state sectional crown.
Junior Rob Fioretti stole the individual spotlight in sparking the Spartans to the sectional crown. He started in the outfield and was 3 for 4 at the plate, delivering an RBI single in the second and a two-run triple in the fourth. A southpaw, Fioretti relieved starter Adam Huron with one out in the fifth and picked up the win to up his mound mark to 3-2 as he worked 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball.
Huron, a righty, started and went 4 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing all eight runs, only one of which was earned.
High Point got on the board with three runs in the top of first before the Spartans tallied a pair of runs in the home half of the inning and pushed four more across the plate in the second to open up a 6-3 lead. The Wildcats retaliated with two in the third to cut the margin to 6-5 before Sparta moved out to a 8-5 lead in the fourth. The Wildcats came back with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to knot the score before James Surowiec came through with the game-winning RBI single in the sixth.
Todd Ryngala had a productive day for the Sparts as he singled and doubled in three official at bats while also walking and reaching base on an error in the fourth as he scored four times. Chris Lotosky chipped in with a two-bagger as the Spartan batting order collected 10 hits off Wildcat hurler Herb Hendershot who suffered his first loss of the season after recording nine straight victories.
