Vikings Sports Highlights For Week Ending September 16, 2001

Jacoby boots Vikings past Falcons

Mike Jacoby stole the offensive spotlight while keeper Bryan Buffalino excelled between the pipes in Vernon's 4-0 victory over Jefferson in an SCIL boys soccer match played on Thursday in Jefferson.
Buffalino stopped all five official shots on goal to post the shutout "W" as Vernon won for the first time in three games. Jacoby netted a pair of goals with Brad Matos and Justin Schutz adding solo goals. James Runyon was credited with an assist.
Vernon pulled out a 3-2 win over Jefferson in a girls soccer match played in Vernon on Wednesday. Meghan Mabey converted a pass from Jessie LaSorsa into the game-winning tally with 15 minutes remaining on the game clock.
Justine Fugowski geaded in the first Viking goal and Katie Lillis drilled home a direct kick as the Vikings pulled out to a 2-1 lead by intermission. Assists were credited to LaSorsa and Dana Pizzi while keeper Meghan Griffin came up with a pair of saves. Vernon outshot the Falcons 18 to 4 during the game to up its record to 2-0-1.
Vernnon blanked Hopatcong 2-0 on Friday to remain unbeaten as Griffin came up with six saves in posting the shutout victory. Her teammates peppered the Chiefs' teepee with 29 shots as LaSorsa and Michelle Baron penetrated the defense for the only two goals of the game.
In field hockey, the Vikings were edged 1-0 by Jefferson on Thursday despite a strong effort between the pipes by Jackie Long who stopped 14 shots on goal.

Vikings, Braves battle to scoreless deadlock in girls soccer

Vernon bombarded Newton goalie Erin Downey with 24 shots but could not dent the Braves teepee as the two squads battled to a scoreless deadlock in the opening game of SCIL girls soccer season that was contested at the Glen Meadow School in Newton on Friday. The Braves attack managed only three official shots at Viking goalies Meghan Griffin who came up with three saves in recording a shutout.
In boys soccer, Vernon outshot Newton 18-6 at St. Paul's Abbey in Andover on Friday but the Vikings could not dent the Braves teepee, dropping a 1-0 decision. Viking keeper Brian Buffatino came uip with three stops.
Newton bested Vernon 4-1 in SCIL girls tennis as Elisa Giorgirlando provided the only Viking point when she posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Meredith Mayes at second singles. Tigana Juhas dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Britton DuBois in the No. 1 single slot and Krissy Lacursi dropped a three-setter to Erica Dardagonis at third singles by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the doubles action, the No. 2 tandem of Colleen McDonald and Mary Kate McKenna lost to Lauren DiPaolo and Katie Graves 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). At first doubles, the duo of Tricia Carrabba and Nicky Zemsky fell to Jamie Nealon and Lora Palanchi by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

DeGrezia 1-hitter blanks Spartans

Chrissy DeGrezia continued her torrid pitching as she blanked Vernon 6-0 on a one-hitter, fanning seven and walking none in a SCIL softball game played Wednesday in Vernon. On Monday, she tossed a perfect game against Hopatcong. The only safety she allowed was a triple to Kathy Hennessey.
Lisa DeSalvia delivered a two-single in the first inning to key a three-run Viking outburst. Vernon added two more runs in the second and one in the fourth in upping its record to 12-12 while the Lady Spartans dropped to 14-9. Sarina Lavooy and Melissa Myslinski both singled twice as Vernon's batting order collected seven singles
In a SCIL baseball game on Wednesday at Sparta, the Vikings dropped a 12-7 decision to the Spartans. Jason Henckel singled and doubled while Pete Anzelone singled twice for the Vikings who dropped to 13-9-1 overall.
A day earlier, the Vikings rallied to defeat West Milford 7-6 in a non-conference diamond confrontation contested in West Milford. Trailing 6-4 with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Vikings rallied with three runs as they capitalized on a two-run error at crunch time. P.J. Anzelone blasted a two-run gome in the fourth inning and Dave Osterhoudt unloaded a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Vernon placed sixth in the Comets Invitational Boys Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Hackensack High School. The Vikings defeated Hackensack, split with Don Bosco Prep and defeated Barringer to finish third in pool play and advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, the host Comets defeated the Vikings 21-7. Seniro setter Marc Gaydos sparkled for the Vikings, completing the all-day competition with eight service points, three kills, 60 assists and a dozen digs.
Kostas Pulopo spiked 27 killes and scooped up 41 digs while Matt Sorenson served nine points, blasted 18 kills, blocked three shots and recorded 16 digs. Mike Frangipane finished with 13 service points and nine digs while Randy Bucsko excelled at the net, coming through with 13 kills and blocking six shots.
Vernon defeated Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania 5-2 in an expanded format non-conference tennis match played Tuesday in Milford, PA. Jon Wesche rallied to defeat Joe Neilsen 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at first dingles and Will DeLoi posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rick Battista at fourth singles. Vernon swept all three doubles matches.

Vikings Sports Report for Week Ending May 13, 2000

Vikings spike Scotties

Matt Sorenson turned in a strong, all-around effort as he powered Vernon to a 2-0 win over Clifford Scott in a varsity boys volleyball match played in East Orange on Friday. Sorenson registered six service points, two of which were aces, five kills, two assists and 15 digs as the Vikings posted wins of 15-7 and 15-7.
Marc Gaydos, a senior, delivered six service points, one of which was an ace, dished off 16 assists, scooped up nine digs and spiked two kills while Alex Lambrinided added three service points, five kills and seven digs. The win was the eighth for the Vikings against 11 setbacks.
Brian Dean fired a 43 to lead Vernon to a 178-211 victory over Hopatcong in an SCIl golf match played at Farmstead. Craig Hansen carded a nine-hole round of 44 and Brian Metros toured the course in 45 strolkes while Dan Boyce and Rob Gorman finishged with 46s and Alex Estrada shot a 48.
In softball, Vernon claimed its first victory over Pope John since 1998 when the Vikings defeated the Lions 5-1 at the Walnut Ridge Elementary School in Vernon. Emily Kondos and Katie Lillis came through with RBI singles in the second when the Vikings moved in front 2-1. Carl DeGrezia picked up the "W" on the mound as she scattered four hits and fanned three.Sarina Lavooy singled and doubled and Gloria Pinck legged out a two-bagger for the Vikings.
Vernon won the boys division of the SCIL Rewlays as the Vikings fielded the gold medal foursomes in the 3200 and 6400 meter relays, the shuttle hurdles and the distance medley.

Vikings Sports Report for Week Ending May 6, 2000

Vernon squeaked out a 3-2 victory over Lenape Valley in an SCIL boys tennis match played Friday in Stanhope as the Vikings garnered their third "W" against 11 setbacks by sweeping the doubles competition.
Brian Connelley and Eric Hunt coasted to a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Chris Davis and Don Grzywacz at first doubles and the No. 2 tandem of Will DeLoi and Pat Griffin rallied to post a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Tom Joiner and Dominic Rupprecht in the second doubles slot.
The Vikings top playe, Jon Wesche, led by example as he defeated Daniel Mintz 6-4, 6-3 to pick up the crucial third team point.
Vernon edged Newton on a the tie-breaking criteria of going to the No. 5 golfer after the top four scores on both teams added up to a 170-170 standoff at the Newton Country Club on Thursday. Ryan Kastner and Craig Jansen finished with rounds of 42 while Tyler Lesch and Bob Sabia carded nine-hole rounds of 43. The winning card was the 45 submitted by Brian Dean while two Newton golfers turned in rounds of 49 for the Braves fifth score.
Vernon's hopes of pulling off an upset in SCIL softball competition on Friday ended in the top of the seventh when Lenape Valley erupted with four runs to pull out a 5-1 victory over the Vikings who dropped to 6-11 overall. Samantha Lavooy picked up an RBI in the opening inning when she grounded out while plating Tina Pecca with the first run of the game.
In a varsity boys volleyball match, the Vikings dropped a 14-16, 15-8, 15-9 marathon to East Side High School of Newark on Friday. Marc Gaydos turned in a strong effort for Vernon, scooping up seven digs, dishing off 20 assists and delivering eight service points. Jon Mick dominated the action at the net, spiking 10 kills and blocking eight shots while earning credit for five digs. Alex Lambrinides chipped in with six kills and a dozen digs for the Vikings who dropped to 9-7.
