Elefante races past LVR

It was Vincent Elefante Day in Vernon on Saturday as the Vikings senior tailback stole the spotlight rushing for 271 yards and scoring three time to spark Vernon to a 28-17 victory over Lenape Valley. The win was the second straight for the Vikings while the Patriots suffered their first setback in two outings.
Elefante took little time in displaying his speed as he broke loose on the first play from scrimmage and raced 74-yards to paydirt but the PAT attempt failed.
Lenape Valley retaliated and took a 7-6 lead later in the quarter when Ryan Macrillo busted two yards into the end zone and Brent Freda split the uprights with his extra point placement.
Vernon regained the lead in the second quarter on a three-yard blast into the end zone by Shawn Damstra who followed with a two-point conversion. Freda booted a 26-yard field goal to pull the Patriots to within 14-10 when the teams exited the field for the halftime break.
Following the intermission, Elefante again electrified the crowd with another 74-yard TD run but the extra point attempt failed as the Vikings upped their advantage to 20-10.
Macrillo narrowed the gap to 20-17 in the fourth quarter when he bolted three yards to paydurts and Freda added the extra point. Once again, Elefante responded, this time carrying the ball five yards into the end zone and Damstra added another two-point conversion to close out the scoring.
Elefante toted the pigskin 22 times in accumulating the 271 yards while quarterback Joe Perez in a limited role, connected on all three aerial attempts for 36 yards.
Vernon travels to Jefferson to play the winless Falcons, a 35-10 loser to Kittatinny on Saturday. It should be a winning day for the Vikings who would claim their third straight victory.

Vikings hold off Braves
By Dennis Wilson

Coming off an 8-2 record in 2000, Vernon made the trip to Palmer Field in Newton as the favorite in the opening day SCIL gridiron battle with the Braves. While Newton running back Tom Andreopoulos tried to scalp the Vikings, Vernon first rallied from 7-0 deficit to put 16 unanswered points on the board over three quarters and then held off a Braves final minute rally to post a 16-13 victory.
Andreopoulous, who toted the pigskin 26 times for 207 yards, put the first points of the game on the when he bolted 33-yards to paydirt in the opening quarter. James Wilton split the pipes with the PAT to give Newton an early 7-0 lead.
It did not take Vernon long to retaliate as Mike Parise hauled in the ensuing kickoff on the Vikings' 18-yard line and raced 82 yards into the Braves end zone. The extra point attempt failed and Newton still lead 7-6 going into the second quarter.
P.J. Anselone put his foot to the ball at the Newton 30-yard line with the first half clock running out, and booted a 40-yard field goal that sailed through the uprights for what would prove to be the winning points.
Following the halftime break, Vincent Elefante added to the Viking lead when he blasted 15-yards to paydirt in the third quarter and Anzelone added the PAT. Elefante was the Viking's top runner for the contest, carrying the ball 14 times for 75 yards.
Vernon quarterback Joe Perez connected on three of eight aerial attempts, all of which were hauled in by Parise who picked up 35 yards on the receptions.
Next up for the Vikings is a Saturday afternoon visit from Lenape Valley. The Patriots rallied to defeat a much-improved Kittatinny squad by a score of 21-14 on Saturday in Hampton. LVR exhibited a quartet of running backs who carried the ball at least nine times and combined to accumulate 150 yards rushing. Quarterback Robert Rutkowski was 3 for 4 in the passing department, throwing for 90 yards that included the game-winning TD toss of 69-yards to Joe Dolce in the fourth quarter.
This is a crucial confrontation for both teams with the winner moving to the fore in the battle for the SCIL title.

Vikings

Coming off a 1-9 mark in 2000, High Point has three veteran runners in Kevinb Braun, Joe Fricchione and Dan Krok who combined to rush for more than 1,000 yards out of the Winged-T offensive backfield. They will get the ball from senior quarterback Brad Szatkiewicz and run behind a talented front wall that is led by the Rudanovic twines, Mitar (6-3, 291) and Milan (6-1, 236). The other members of the OL are Sean Beighley, John Krok and Alan McLaughlin.
Overall the Wildcats return nine starters on both sides of the ball plus place-kicker Ben Cerutti who split the uprights with three field goals last season, the longest from 37-yards out.
