Gagg’s 2-hitter cages Cougars

Bobby Gagg pitched and batted Wallkill Valley to a 3-0 victory over Kittatinny in an SCIL baseball game played in Hampton on Wednesday. Gagg hurled a two-hit shutout, fanning 15 without allowing a base on balls while going 2 for 3 at the plate, including a two-bagger in the top of the seventh. The win was the third in five decision for Gagg while the Rangers evened their record at 6-6.
Mike Sudol doubled Tyler Wenz home in the third inning with what proved to be the game-winning tally. Vinnie Gengaro knocked in Cody Herbert with a sacrifice fly and Tommy Babcock picked up an RBI in the seventh.
The next day, Vinny Joyce blasted a pair of homers, doubled and singled in four plate appearance to fuel the Rangers’ 19-5 rout of Hopatcong. Joyce scored five runs and knocked in three while Sudol, who went 3 for 6 including round-tripper, scored four times and plated three teammates.
Jan Murken turned in a three-over par nine-hole round of 38 as Wallkill Valley defeated Newton 165-178 in a SCIL golf match played at the Wallkill Valley Country Club on Thursday. Kevin Reidinger finished with a 41 while A.J. Thornton shot a 42 and Matt Bloodgood, Pat DiNicolas and Rob Zimmerer posted scores of 44 as the Rangers upped their record to 11-5.
Shawn Aupperlee tripled in leading the Rangers to a 90-45 victory over High Point in an SCIL track & field meet. Aupperlee sprinted to a first place finish in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 11.6 seconds. He cleared 11 feet to win the pole vault and leaped 20 feet, 1 inch to win the long jump. Mike Burghoffer dominated the distance events, winning the 1600-meter run in 4:59.9 and was fastest to the finish in the 3200-meter run with a clocking of 11:01.3.

Ranger trio leaps to gold in Randolph Relays

Wallkill Valley’s trio of Shawn Aupperlee, Brandon Krakowiak and Nick Paiva leaped 55-5 ½ to a gold medal finish in Division 2 the Randolph Relays on Saturday. Mike Johnson joined the trio and the Rangers finished fourth in the 400-meter relay with a clocking of 47.53 seconds. Wallkill Valley was eighth in the 15-team standings.
Alex Agnor, Dan Banki and Bill Scott teamed up to toss the discus a combined distance of 304-3 to pick up the bronze medals. The trio placed fifth in the shot put when they flipped the 12-pound ball 112-7 ¾. Paul Figuroa, Zach Kansler and Jeremy Singleton took sixth in the javelin with a distance of 362-11.
In the girls’ competition, the Lady Rangers tied Boonton for 10th place among the 14 entries. Heather Coffaro, Amber Gardocki and Whitney Montalbano claimed the bronze medals in the discus with a distance of 266-8 while the quartet of Aimee Chegiwdden, Lauren Cloase, Katie Moriarty and Laura Williams finished fourth in the distance medley with a clocking of 13:59.74.
Sophomore Rob Zimmerer carded the low nine-hole round of 40 to spark Wallkill Valley to a 168-251 rout of Hopatcong in an SCIL golf match played over the Valley Course at the Farmstead Golf and Country Club. Pat DiNicolas fired a 41 and Jan Murken toured the nine holes in 42 strokes while Brandon Van Allen completed the team scoring with a 45.
Wallkill Valley defeated Roxbury 4-1 in a non-league boys’ tennis match. Matt England trounced Ale Cop 6-1, 6-0 in the confrontation of No. 1 singles players while Rob Walker blanked Rob Diton 6-0, 6-0 in the second singles slot. Hap Wiggins completed the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over John Miseo at third singles

Nordlund excels on mound

Scott Norlund went the distance, scattering four hits, fanning three and walking three as he pitched Wallkill Valley to a 4-1 win over Hunterdon Central in the opening round of the Red Devil Classic. Edison defeated the Rangers 9-5 in the title game.
On April 6, Nordlund fired a three-hit shutout as the Rangers blanked Kittatinny 10-0 in an SCIL confrontation that was halted after five innings by the 10-run rule. Nordlund whiffed five and walked four as he was named the sussexcountyinterscolasticleague.com/Richards & Summers Player of the Week.
Rob Zimmerer carded the low nine-hole round of 45 to lead Wallkill Valley to a 189-208 victory over Sussex Tech in a golf match played at Black Bear. Matt Bloodgood toured the nine holes in 47 strokes while Kyle Backman and Pat DiNicholas finished with rounds of 48.
Nicole Van Tassel doubled and tripled, knocking in three runs as Wallkill Valley defeated Newton 12-8 in an SCIL softball game. Trailing 8-6 in the sixth, Diane Washer tripled in two runs and Janelle Reed delivered a two-run single. Frosh Amanda Nann allowed seven hits and fanned 11 in recording her first varsity victory.

Herbert's triple-double spurs Rangers

Wallkill Valley coasted to a 51-40 triumph over Pope John in an SCIL boys' basketball encounter played in Hardyston on Friday evening. The Rangers, who failed to qualify for last year's SCIL Festival, possess a 15-5 record following the win over the Lions.
Cody Herbert turned in a rare triple-double to spur the Rangers. He dumped 11 points into the basket, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked 10 shots. Mike Hern topped all scorers when he hit the hoop for 19 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Vinny Joyce finished with nine points.
Wallkill Valley posted a 42-27 decision over Hopatcong in an SCIL wrestling match on February 11. C.J. Yohm (135) and Corey Quinn (160) produced pins for the Rangers who won for the third time while dropping 16 matches.
Diane Washer netted a game-high 14 points. Including a trio of three-point bombs, but the Lady Rangers lost a 40-36 decision in overtime to High Point.

Lady Rangers qualify for states

Wallkill Valley moved out to an 11-6 lead after eight minutes and upped it advantage to 26-19 entering the fourth quarter before posting a 34-32 victory over Vernon that earned the Lady Rangers a berth in the NJSIAA post-season playoffs. The win was the ninth against nine setbacks.
Nikki Van Tassel was the top gun on the attack, netting a game-high 18 points.
In the boys’ confrontation, the Rangers rolled to a 49-39 victory over the Vikings after leading 40-25 entering the last quarter. The key to success for the Rangers was a 19-5 run in the second quarter. Mike Hern deposited a team-high 13 points into the basket while Cody Herbert and Stacy Kocka connected for 10 points apiece.
Wallkill Valley defeated Pope John 54-24 for its first success in SCIL wrestling this season. Travis Wenz (119), Doug Fisher (125), C.J. Yahm (135), A.J. DiPietri (140), Phil Pinto (152), Andrew Kasa (160) and Adam Hompesch (215) produced pins for the Rangers with Pinto’s 12-second execution of Justin Fernandez rating as Sussex County’s fastest fall of the week.
