Zimmerer hurls Rangers past Falcons

Wallkill Valley erupted for five runs in the top of the first and Ricky Zimmerer went the distance as the Rangers defeated Jefferson 6-3 in a Sussex County Interscholastic League baseball game played in Jefferson on Wednesday. The win was the ninth for the Rangers against a dozen setbacks whil the Falcons dropped to 13-9.
Zimmerer scattered seven hits, fanned four and walked only one in upping his record to 3-1. Chris Henderson and Kevin Lukich connected for two hits apiece with Henderson legging out a double as he plated a run.
In a non-conference baseball game played Tuesday in Blairstown, the Rangers rallied for three runs, keyed by a two-run double off the bat of Mike Restel, but could not close the gap in dropping a 7-5 decision to Blair Academy.
Wallkill Valley became another statistic as Jefferson's Kristyn DePasquale stopped the Rangers 8-1on Thursday for her 98th career win as she surges to become the first softball pitcher in New Jersey history to reach to the 100-win plateau. Chrissy Gordon singled twice of four plate appearances as the Rangers collected four hits.

Wallkill Valley swept the doubles competitions to defeat Hopatcong 3-2 in an SCIL boys tennis match played at the Civic Center in Hopatcong on Thursday, The winw as the sixth of the season against nine setbacks for the Rangers.
Matt Avery and Chris Scovzen battled to a 6-2, 7-5 win at first doubles over Brian Prentice and Anil Tahilliani. In the No. 2 doubles slot, the duo of Mike Castiglione and Matt DeBree rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nick Margo and Rob Marshall.
John Pietrodangelo came on strong at third singles to provide the crucial third team point by defeating Aaron Hill 6-4, 6-0.
In the SCIL Relays, the Rangers won the pole vault as the duo of Ryan Spirito and Ryan Tilley cleared a combined height 24-6. It was a first place finish in the shot put as Chip Roberts and Rick Slowik tossed the 12-pound ball 87-6.75 to claim the gold medals. Roberts teamed with Joe Van Kirk to win the discus competition with a distance of 264-4.
In the girls division the foursome of Nicole Gusmano, Antoinette Battisti, Leanne Rivers and Meredith Hopken sprinted to a first place finish in the 400-meter relay with a time of 51.2 seconds. With Allison DeSalvia taking Rivers slot, the Rangers finished first in the 800-meter relay with a clocking of 1:47.9. Kristina Austin and Amber Gordocki finished first in the discus with a combined distance of 217-11.
In golf, the Rangers defeated Lenape Valley 165-182 as Russ Bloodgood carded a three-over par dound of 38 at the Wallkill Valley Country Club. Bloodgood had four pars and a birdie on his card. Tamara Bargiel and Jon Corrier finished with 20s and Keith Balagtos completed the team scoring totals in the low four of six format, touring the nine holes in 47 strokes.

Paced by a double gold medal performance from Meredith Hopken, Wallkill Valley raced to the team title in the small school girls division of the County Seat Invitational contested at Wayne Hills High School on Saturday. In the boys division, the Rangers placed third behind Cresskill and Palisades Park.
Hopken sprinted to victory in the 100-meter dash, breaking the tape in 12.7 seconds and followed with a first place effort in the 200-meter dash when she recorded the winning clocking of 26.3 seconds. Her teammate Nicole Guamano placed fifth the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.6 seconds.
Wallkill Valley picked up five team points in the 400-meter dash as Allison DeSalvia finished fourth in 1:04.0 with Vanessa Telischak trailing in sixth place with a time of 1:05.4. Kelly Moore added a sixth place finish in the 3200 meter run with a clocking of 12:49.7 while Kristen Wisneski glided over the 400-meter low hurdles to a fifth place finish in 1:15.9. Wisneski added another fifth place effort in the pole vault when she went over the bar a seven feet even.
Kristina Austin turned in a silver medal performance in the discus competition with a toss of 106-7 while Amber Gardocki placed fourth in the shot put, flipping the eight-pound ball 32-3 1/2.
John Vislocky paced the Rangers to the third place team finish in the boys division with a gold medal effort in the 110-meter high hurdles where he was clocked in 15.4 seconds.
Karl Goovaerts picked up a silver medal in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:04.0 and finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a clocking of 53.2 seconds. James Western placed third in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:24.6 and was sixth in the metric mile, covering the 1600 meter course in 4:51.3. Jeff Trevenen placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.7 seconds and leaped 19 feet to finish fifth in the long jump.
Chip Roberts heaved the discus 140-7 to pick up the silver medal and flipped the 12-pound ball 42-7 to finish sixth in the event while teammate Rich Slowik captured a bronze medal in the event with a put of 46-1. Ryan Tilley tied for fifth place in the high jump when he cleared the bar at 5-8.

Tied 23-23 at halftime, Wallkill Valley steadily pulled away in the second half to post a 65-56 win over Jefferson on Thursday in Hardyston. Chris Hendershot found the range in the third quarter, hitting the hoop with 10 of his game-high 28 points and was chosen the sportsinthegardenstate.com Sussex County Boys Basketball Player of the Week. Bryan Sherlock was on target down the stretch, tickling the twine 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter. The win was the third of the season for the Rangers who have dropped nine decisions.

Leeanne Rivers stole the spotlight as she powered Wallkill Valley to a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Westwood in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey, Section 1, Group II girls soccer tournament on Thursday afternoon in Bergen County.
Rivers tickled the Cardinals cage twice and was selected the Eastern Propane/Sports Beat Player of the Week for her performance. Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Rivers rallied the Rangers, scoring twice in the second half with Kristine Deer picking up an assist.
Keeper Kathleen Brady excelled between the pipes as she stopped six shots on goal to preserve the win.

Rangers race to first-ever NJSIAA sectional X/C title

Senior James Western led the Ranger pack to the finish line, placing fifth with a clocking of 17:08.2 while teammate Brian Burdzy finished seventh with a time of 17:26.1. Freshman Mike Burghoffer was 14th with a clocking of 18:21.2 while senior Brian Fryer completed the team total with a 16th place effort in 18:27.7. The other Ranger competitors were freshmen Paul Chegwidden who was 22nd in 18:36.7 and Alex Wright who crossed the line 29th in a time of 19:02.0.
In the girls division, Wallkill Valley placed fifth and also advances to the Group II title race at Holmdel Park on the same day. Ramsey won the girls title with Newton second followed by Kittatinny and Dumont. Terez Tala was the lead Ranger, finishing 24th in 23:01.5.

Ranger Sports Highlights for Week of October 23, 2000

Rangers blank North Warren

Wallkill Valley earned a berth in the 2000 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey, Section 1, Group II field hockey tournament on Friday with a 2-0 victory over North Warren that elevated its record to 7-6-1. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Rangers just in time as Friday was the cutoff sate for teams to qualify with at least a .500 or better record.
After failing to qualify for the 1999 state playoffs, three members of the Class of 2001 played major roles in locking up the bid for the 2000 playoffs. Stephanie Hern netted both goals, one in each half as she upped her season total to 17 goals and 42 points while classmate Christy Gordon picked up an assist. Junior Meredith Hopken dished off an assist that set up the first goal of the game with five minutes remaining before the halftime break.
Between the pipes, goalie Natalie Pignataro came up with three saves to record her first shutout of the season while lowering her goals against average to 1.76 per game.
