Santonastaso bronze medal effort spurs Cougars

Andrea Santonastaso turned in a bronze medal effort as she paced Kittatinny to the team title in the Sophomore Girls Division of the Roxbury Cross Country Invitational contested at Horseshoe Park in Succasunna on Saturday. The Cougars edged runnerup Ridge 34-37 with Hillsborough in third place with 69 points.
A sophomore, Santonastaso was clocked in 21 minutes, 7 seconds as she finished in third place behind Ridge's Kim Philhower and Roxbury's Sara Huckbody. Her teammate Katy Nolan finished in fourth place, posting a time of 21 minutes, 15 seconds. The other Cougar runners were Alison Estock (22:32), Laura Swofford (22:41) and Nicole Becker (22:58).
In the frosh girls division, Kittatinny's Kim Kraemer finished sixth with a time of 15 minutes, 25 seconds.

In the Suffern Invitational held at Bear Mountain State Park in Harriman, Wallkill Valley's James Western finished eighth in 16 minutes, 50 seconds and at the St. Dominic Academy Invitational in Hudson County, Pope John placed fourth in the girls division and eight in the boys competition.
Hopatcong defeated Sparta 21-39 in an SCIL girls dual meet on Thursday as Kira McGroaryt won the event easily with a time of 20 minutes, 13 seconds. Her teammate Jacquie Sobotka was runnerup with a time of 22 minutes, 43 seconds. Sparta's top runners were Lindsey Larson who finished in 24 minutes, 39 seconds and Lauren Shea who was timed in 24 minutes, 59 seconds.
High Point routed Newton 15-49 in a boys dual meet as Jason Salvador broke the tape in 17 minutes, 44 seconds to lead the Wildcats. Jeremy Apgar (19:54) and Brian Witzig (19:57) finished 2-3 for High Point.

Week of September 10, 2000

McGroarty excels on the X/C paths

Hopatcong's Kira McGroarty pulled away from the field to post a runaway victory by more than two minutes over runnerup Barbara Nickle of Jefferson in a three-way SCIL dual cross country meet between the Chiefs, Falcons and Lenape Valley on Monday afternoon.
McGroarty was clocked in 23 minutes, 13 seconds while Nickle turned in a time of 25 minutes, 39 seconds. Finishing third was Jefferson's Elyse Braner who was timed in 26 minutes, 17 seconds while Hopatcong's Jacquie Sobotka was fourth in 26 minutes, 57 seconds.
Pope John picked up victories over Sparta and Walklkill Valley as Erin Murphy (21:15), Jen Romero (21:36), Erica Avondoglia (21:45), Katy Wood (22:25) and Kay McGowan (23.14) swept the first five places for the Lions. Sparta's Lindsey Larson (23.52) was sixth and Wallkill Valley's Michelle Guzman (24:11) finished in seventh place.
Cindy deVries led Newton to wins over Kittatinny and Vernon, posting the winning time 22 minutes, 12 seconds. Vernon, which lost to the Braves 27-28, was led by Jess Macaluso (22:59) and Megan Simpson (23:10) who placed 2-3 while Kittatinny's Kim Kraemer (23:13) finished in fourth place.
