Spartans, Vikings share SCIL title

Sparta and Vernon finished with 16-2 league records and shared the 2006 Sussex County Interscholastic League boys' soccer title. Vernon edged Lenape Valley 3-2 on Wednesday, a day after Sparta had routed Jefferson 7-0.
Sparta gained its 17th SCIL championship banner and fifth straight crown as senior midfielder Tommy McCormick netted a pair of goals and was chosen the SCIL/Soccer Post of Lafayette Village Player of the Week. Rob Arena, Kyle Behrendt, Frank DiSomma, Rafael Milan and Kyle Pflika netted goals with Behrendt and Mark Hulsebbeck, a four-year starter like McCormick, distributing two assists apiece. Vinny Cinotti and Kurt Donaldson were credited with assists while keeper Greg Miller recorded the shutout making one save.
Vernon clinched its share of the crown when Ethan Eustace, James Gibson and Kyle Walburn scored solo goals. Keeper Conrad Rusnak came up with three saves. A day earlier, Vernon advanced in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group IV tourney by defeating Belleville 3-2. Alex Ceron scored twice and Eustace once with Gibson picking up an assist.
In the Group II playoffs, keeper Justin Kretzmer stopped three shots on goal as Newton blanked Dwight Morrow of Englewood 2-0. Kevin Reinheimer tallied both goals in the first half with Kevin Churchill picking up an assist.
Kittatinny and Pope John battled to a 2-2 draw after a scoreless overtime when darkness prevented a second OT period. Mustafa Adiguzelli and Justin Junior scored for the Cougars while Brian Ernhardt and Connor Phalon tallied goals for the Lions.

Miller records 13th shutout

Sparta upped its overall record to 16-2 as keeper Greg Miller stopped five shots on a goal in blanking High Point 5-0 on Friday afternoon. It was Miller's 13th shutout of the campaign and he was chosen the SCIL/Soccer Post of Lafayette Village Player of the Week. The Spartans remained tied with Vernon for first place in the SCIL boys' soccer standings with one game remaining against last place Jefferson on Halloween. A win over the Falcons will bring the Spartans their fifth straight SCIL title. Rob Arena netted a pair of goals while Tommy McCormick added a goal and assist.
Kittatinny shut out Hopatcong 2-0 as keeper Brandt Memmelaar stopped a pair of shots. Joey Ditta and Justin Junior netted first half goals with assists credited to Mustafa Adiguzelli and Chris Steingall.
Connor Phalon turned in a hat trick performance to spur Pope John to a 5-1 triumph over Wallkill Valley. Jose San Martin chipped in with a goal and assist while Derrik Grant tallied a goal. Frank Belardo and A. J Ferriola picked up assists while keeper Chris Schwork stopped seven shots on goal as the Lions improved to 16-3.
On Wednesday. Ethan Eustace notched a hat trick, scoring three times to increase his SCIL-leading total to 18 goals as Vernon blanked High Point 6-0. Tom Polizos and Kyle Walburn scored while goalie Conrad Rusnak made two saves.
Jeremy Pizarro produced a hat trick effort as Lenape Valley rolled to a 5-0 win over Hopatcong. Giancarlo Morales and Steve Sadowski added solo goals with Tim Bahnsen and Ryan Schneider picking up assists while Justin Cirone came up with three saves between the posts.

Lions post back-to-back shutouts

Connor Phalon fueled Pope John's 5-0 triumph over Jefferson on Friday in a Sussex County Interscholastic League boys' soccer match played in Sparta. Phalon netted a pair of goals and dished off an assist as the Lions led 1-0 at the break before breaking the game open. Frank Berlado, Connor Brady and Greg Hargrave added goals while Hargrave picked up a pair of assist. Pat McFadden and keeper Chris Schwork, who came up with two saves in recording his 11th shutout of the campaign, were credited with assists. Two days earlier, the Lions edged Vernon 1-0 on a second goal by Cory Haynes off an assist by Hargrave, a freshman, who was named the SCIL/Soccer Post of Lafayette Village Player of the Week.
On Friday, Vernon boosted its record to 13-3-1 as Casey Rusnak recorded three saves in blanking Wallkill Valley 2-0. Eric Card and Kyle Walburn scored with Walburn picking up an assist.
Sparta routed Hopatcong 7-0 as the trio of Ricky Brown, Tommy McCormick and Kyle Pflika netted two goals apiece with McCormick dishing off two assists. Rafael Milan added a solo goal while Vinny Cinoti picked up two assists. Evan Bernat and Pflika were credited with assists and keeper Greg Miller came up with a save.
Jeremy Pizarro scored twice as Lenape Valley blanked Wallkill Valley 3-0. Tom Benack added a solo goal with Ryan Schneider and Adam Soccio picking up assists. Keeper Justin Cirone excelled between the pipes, making 11 saves as LVR improved to 6-8.
On Wednesday, High Point defeated Jefferson 4-2 as Austin Benston, Joe Konopinski, Corbin Opilla and Drew Styer netted goals for the Wildcats. Brandon Ritter was credited with a pair of assists as the Wildcats upped their record to 5-11.

Hopatcong captures 1st "W"

Keeper Lou Parisi keyed Hopatcong to a 2-0 win over Jefferson as the Chiefs captured their first "W" of the campaign. Parisi came up with five saves and was named the SCIL/Soccer Post of Lafayette Village Player of the Week. Ryan Arnone and Bryce Whitenack netted the goals with Tom Masterson picking up an assist.
Vernon and Scotch Plains-Fanwood, a state-power, battled to a 2-2 draw following a pair of scoreless overtime periods on Saturday. James Gibson and Pat Jaron netted first half goals with Eric Card picking up an assist while keeper Conrad Rusnak made six saves. Kyle Wallburn scored twice as Vernon bested Newton 4-1 three days earlier. Ethan Eustace added a goal and an assist while Jaron also scored. Rusnak was credited with three saves.
Pope John blanked St. Peter's Prep 3-0 as goalie Chris Schwork came up with seven saves to record the shutout between the pipes. Connor Brady, Cory Haynes and Jose Luis San Martin netted the goals with San Martin, Frank Belardo and Cory Haynes picking up assists as the Lions improved to 12-3-0.
Justin Junior snapped a 1-1 tie in the 78th minutes when he scored the game-winning tally as Kittatinny edged High Point 2-1. Mustafa Adiguzelli and Chris Steingall picked up assists while Cougar keeper Bradnt Memmerlaar made five saves. Drew Styer scored for High Point off an assist from Corbin Opilla as goalie Jason Steiger stopped six shots. A day earlier, Adiguselli netted a goal and picked up an assist as Kittatinny romped to a 6-1 win over High Point. Junior added two goals.

Vikings blank Spartans

Vernon stopped Sparta 2-0 in a matchup of first place contenders. Eric Card and Ethan Eustace scored for the Vikings who improved to 9-1 while the Spartans dropped to 9-2. Card and Kyle Walbun picked up assists as keeper Conrad Rusnak made nine saves and was chosen the SCIL/Soccer Post of Lafayette Village Player of the Week.
Wallkill Valley defeated Jefferson 2-0 as Yannic Lobe and Emilio Tirri scored for the Rangers with Pat Nyhius and Greg Smith picking up assists. Goalie Alex Dandorf made two stops. Two days earlier, Kittatinny blanked Wallkill Valley 3-0 as keeper Brandt Memmelaar made three saves. Mustafa Adiguzelli and Joey Ditta both scored and dished off an assist while Justin Junior netted the game-winning tally as the Cougars scored all three goals in the second half.
Newton toppled Jefferson 4-1 on Tuesday as Bobby Cloughssey scored twice. Jari Barrados and Andy Szanyl added goals with keeper D.J. Meisinger credited with three saves.
Goalie Chris Schwork made eight saves as Pope John blanked High Point 5-0 to improve to 10-2. Cory Haynes scored twice while Frank Bellardo chipping in with a goal and assist. John Quatomine and Jose Luis San Martin added goals with Ryan Ehrhardt and Greg Hargrove picking up assists.

Eustace fuels Vikings' back-to-back victories

Ethan Eustace netted five goals to spur Vernon to wins over Lenape Valley and High Point. On Wednesday, Eustace scored three goals to ignite the Vikings to a 8-2 rout of High Point. James Gibson and Pat Jaron both chipped in with two goals and assist while Kyle Walburn completed the scoring parade. Two days later, Eustace scored twice in a 4-1 victory over the Patriots and was selected the SCIL/Soccer Post Player of the Week. Jaron and Walburn added solo goals with Tom Polizos and John Yaccarino picking up assists.
Keeper Justin Kretzmer stopped six shots on goal as Newton blanked High Point 1-0. Yuri Burrado tallied the only goal in the second half off an assist from Jeff Williams as the Braves improved to 5-4.
Justin Junior scored twice in Kittatinny's 4-1 victory over Pope John. Mustafa Adiguzelli and Joey Ditta added goals as the Cougars surged to a 4-0 lead by the halftime break. Adiguzelli, Chris Buken, Jake Sappio and Kris Sreingall dished off assists while goalies Brandt Memmelaar and Mike Danko combined to come up with seven saves.
Sparta rolled to its ninth success in 10 tries by shutting out Jefferson 9-0. Rob Arena posted a hat trick effort, scoring three goals and dishing off an assist while Ricky Brown tallied two goals and picked up an assist. Kyle Behrendt, Frank DiSomma, Mark Huelsenbeck and Tommy McCormick added solo goals with Evan Bernat, Pat Driscoll and McCormick recording assists. Keeper Greg Miller made one save to receive credit for the shutout in the goal.

Cougars win back-to-back shutouts

Kittatinny edged Newton 1-0 as the Cougars defeated the Braves for the first time in 12 years. Jake Sappio netted the only goal of the game in the first half off an assist from Chris Steingall. Keeper Brandt Memmelaar came up with six saves to record the shutout "W" between the pipes. Two days later, Kittatinny blanked Hopatcong 4-0 as Memmelaar came up with eight saves and was picked the SCIL/Soccer Post Player of the Week. Chris Buken and Justin Junior both scored a goal and dished off an assist while Joey Ditta and Steingall tallied solo goals.
Vernon rolled to a 4-1 triumph over Wallkill Valley as Alejandro Machedo scored twice with Ethan Eustice and Pat Jaron adding solo goals. Eric Card, Matt Rosano and Kyle Walburn picked up assists while keeper Alex Dandorf recorded eight saves.
Keeper Chris Schwork recorded another shutout, stopping three shots on goal, as Pope John blanked Jefferson 3-0. The Lions improved to 5-1 as A.J. Belardo, Conner Phalon and Jose Luis San Martin scored goals with Belardo dishing off a pair of assists.
Sparta trounced High Point 7-0 as goalie Greg Miller recorded three saves. Tommy McCormick netted a pair of goals and dished off an assist while Rob Arena, Evan Bernit, Ricky Brown, Pat Driscoll and Kurt Donaldson scored goals. Bernit and Vinny Cinotti were credited with two assists apiece.

Schwork's 27 saves earns SCIL Player of the Week accolades

Pope John's keeper Chris Schwork turned aside 15 shots on goal as the Lions blanked Lenape Valley 1-0. A.J. Ferriola netted the only goal of the game unassisted in the first half while LVR's goalie stopped seven shots. Earlier in the week, Sparta edged Pope John 1-0 in two overtimes as Schwork posted a dozen saves to keep the Lions in contention. Rob Arena tallied the game winner in the second OT period off an assist from Kyle Behrendt as Spartan goalie Greg Miller came up with five saves. Schwork's back-to-back efforts of a combined 27 stops on 28 shots on goals earned the Lions' goalkeeper the SCIL/Soccer Post Player of the Week honors.
Vernon remained unbeaten, boosting its record to 4-0 with a 2-1 victory over Newton in overtime on Friday. Ethan Eustace and Kyle Walburn scored for the Vikings with assists credited to Pat Jaron and Matt Zinn while keeper Conrad Rusnak was not credited with an official save. For the Braves who dropped to 2-1, frosh Kevin Churchill netted the only goal of the first half with Eric Denison picking up an assist. Goalie Justin Kretzmer was impressive between the pipes for the Braves, coming up with 14 saves.
On Wednesday Newton scored twice in the second half to edge Wallkill Valley 3-2. Kyle Reinhardt scored twice and Churchill once while Travis Wenz netted both Ranger goals with Jason Snover picking up an assist.
High Point toppled Hopatcong 5-1 as the Wildcats surged to a 4-1 win lead by the halftime break. Joe Konopinski scored twice and dished off an assist while Adam Carson chipped in with a goal and assist. Josh Brands and Matt Hlavaty added goals with Austin Bentson picking up a pair of assists.
Kittatinny defeated Lenape Valley 4-1 as Justin Junior posted a hat trick performance, netting three goals for the Cougars. Joey Ditta scored once and distributed a pair of assists while Matt Cacciagudia was credited with an assist. Cougar goalie Brant Memmelaar stopped eight shots.

LVR's Pizzaro chosen boys' soccer Player of the Week

Jeremy Pizzaro supplied the firepower as Lenape Valley opened the 2006 SCIL boys' soccer season with a 3-2 overtime victory over High Point on Friday afternoon in High Point. Pizzaro rallied the Patriots from a 2-1 deficit at the halftime break, netting a hat trick as he was chosen the SCIL Player of the Week. His teammate Nick Scheibner picked up assists on each goal while LVR's keeper John Pavlichko stopped a dozen shots on goal.
Kittatinny keeper Brant Memmelaar posted a 3-0 shutout, making four saves, as the Cougars blanked Wallkill Valley 3-0 by scoring three times in the second half. Mustafa Adiguzelli tallied a pair of goals with Joey Ditta netting one.
Pope John rolled to a 4-0 shutout victory over Hopatcong as goalie Chris Schwork came up with 10 saves. Connor Phalon powered the attack with a hat trick effort that included three goals and an assist. Josh Steel added a solo goal.
Newton blitzed Jefferson 6-0 as freshman Kevin Churchill netted a pair of goals in his varsity debut. Kyle Reinhardt scored twice and dished off an assist while Eric Dennison and Dan DiMarzi tallied solo goals.
Pat Jaron netted both goals as Vernon blanked Sparta 2-0 on opening day. Eric Card and Scott Roettger dished off assists.
