| Don Smolyn and Vic Paternostro coaching teams in the NJSIAA playoff championships
is nothing new and 2004 will be no exception to the rule. Lenape Valley edged Pascack Valley 34-33 to reach the
finals of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group II bracket while Pope John rolled to a 34-16 triumph over Holy Cross
in the Non-Public Group III semifinals. Next week, the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association will provide a comprehensive preview of the state championship games between Lenape Valley and Lakeland that will be played at Giants Stadium on December 4 at 7:30 PM as well as Pope John versus St. Joseph Regional/Montvale.which will be contested at Rutgers on December 4 at 5:00 PM. It was a thriller in Stanhope as Pascack Valley of the North Bergen Interscholastic Athletic League took a 33-28 lead h 1:27 remaining on the game clock as the Indians' Kevin Gray raced 86 yards to paydirt with a recovered fumble. LVR rebounded immediately Bill Gallagher hauled in a three-yard TD strike from quarterback Scott Vladyka on the final play of the game to give the Patriots a 34-33 victory as their was no PAT attempt. It was the third touchdown of the game for Gallagher who scored earlier on runs of 19 and 1 yards while Vladyka plunged one-yard into the end zone in the second quarter. Joe Ferruggia bolted 45 yards to the end zone in the third quarter and just as important, Robbie Klinck split the uprights on all four of his extra point placements. Holy Cross of the Burlington County Scholastic League took an early 3-0 lead in the opening quarter and maintained a 10-6 advantage at the halftime break before the unbeaten Lions got rolling and posted their 11th straight victory. Jason Harper found a seam in the Lancers' defensive unit in the first quarter and raced 62 yards into the end zone. Harper fueled the Lions' second-half surge when he scored on runs of 21 and 68 yards in the third quarter as the Lions opened up a 22-10 lead. Harper churned out 303 yards on 28 carries while Mark Meehan iced the verdict with TD runs of 18 and 6 yards in the fourth quarter.. Sparta’s quest to defend its North Jersey, Section 1, Group II title ended on Friday evening in Wanaque when unbeaten and top-seeded Lakeland ousted the Spartans by a score of 31-7. Lakeland opened up a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter and padded the margin to 24-0 before the Spartans got on the board early in the fourth quarter. Tom Lindsley bolted three yards into the end zone and Alex Heckman split the pipes with the PAT for the final Spartan points of the 2004 gridiron campaign. |

| So what else is new in Sussex County gridiron circles? Over the weekend,
Lenape Valley, Pope John and Sparta posted opening round victories and advanced into the semifinal rounds of the
NJSIAA post-season football playoffs. Pope John rolled to a 35-14 victory over Paul IV of Haddonfield on Sunday
in a twice-postponed Non-Public A confrontation that was finally played on the campus of Sussex Tech in Sparta.
The Lions play Holy Cross this weekend at a site and date to be announced. On Saturday, Lenape Valley crushed Kittatinny 41-7 in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group II bracket in Stanhope while Sparta coasted to a 32-6 victory over Tenafly in the same bracket. Lenape Valley hosts Pascack Valley of the North Bergen Interscholastic League and Sparta visits unbeaten Lakeland Regional of the Northern Hills Conference this weekend. Jason Harper continued his offensive contributions by rushing for 330 yards and scoring twice on suns of 50 and 38 yards as the unbeaten Lions won their 10th straight. On the defensive side of the ball, junior defensive end Peter Corrigan turned in a outstanding effort and was chosen the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com/Metropolitan New York Football Writers Player of the Week. Corrigan was credited with a dozen tackles, three quarterback sacks, knocked down a pair of passes and recovered a fumble. Bill Gallagher, who rushed 13 times for 132 yards, paced the Patriots with TD runs of 14, 45 and five yards while Mike Avola bolted 38 yards to paydirt and caught a 10-yard TD strike from quarterback Scott Vladyka. Ryan Skorupka powered the Spartans to victory by scoring four times on runs of 1, 99, 9 and 42 yards as the Spartans improved to 6-4 while handing the Tigers their third setback against six victories. While the success stories of Lenape Valley, Pope John and Sparta continue, Vernon added a new chapter to its football history in an NJSIAA consolation game in Saturday when the Vikings defeated perennial state-power Montclair 23-20 on Saturday. It was the fifth setback of the season for the Mounties but their conquerors include NNJIL rivals Don Bosco Prep, Bergen Catholic and St. Joseph Regional/Montvale plus South Jersey powerhouse Mainland Regional. Justin Gannon hauled in a 35-yard TD aerial from B.J. Fusco to get the Vikings on the board in the first quarter and Ryan Anzelone booted the extra point. Anzelone split the uprights with a 40-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter before Chris Mirazita scampered 33 yards to paydirt and Gannon bolted 31 yards into the end zone in the fourth quarter as the Vikings completed its season with a 7-3 record. Jefferson exploded to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and went on to defeat Wallkill Valley 41-21 in a consolation encounter played in Jefferson. Chris Hansen ignited the early outburst scoring on runs of 18, 2 and 11 yards before Keith Runne hauled in a 47-yard TD pass from B.J. Stokes. Hansen added TD runs of 55 and 34 yards in the fourth quarter to seal the victory as he rushed 30 times for 273 yards and five six-pointers. Mark Castiglione returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown and raced 43 yards to paydirt to highlight the Rangers’ scoring. High Point dropped a 35-28 thriller to Mount Olive in a consolation encounter played in Wantage. Mike Collason scored twice on a pair of three-yard runs while Pat Helmer raced 32 yards into the end zone and Brian Konopka blasted one yard over the goal for the Wildcats. Newton dropped a 28-14 decision to Dover. Joe Frangiegh rushed 12 yards into the end zone in the opening quarter and Kevin Johnson blasted four yards to paydirt to end the scoring in the fourth quarter for the Braves who finished with a 1-9 record. |

| Billy Gallagher rushed for a new school scoring record as Lenape Valley
routed Newton 35-7 in Newton on Saturday afternoon. The win was the seventh in nine outings for the Patriots who
have been seeded No. 2 in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group II playoffs and will host seventh-seeded SCIL
rival Kittatinny on Saturday in Stanhope with the kickoff set for 1:00 PM. Gallagher, who rushed seven times for 61 yards, scored on a 25-yard run in the opening quarter and set a new LVR record for career points with 144 when he bolted three yards into the end zone in the second quarter. The old record of 138 was set by Joe Labell from 1877 to 1979. Pope John completed its regular season unbeaten in nine games following a 42-25 victory over Sparta. The Lions built up a 35-7 lead entering the fourth quarter as Jason Harper and Mark Meehan both scored a pair of touchdowns and Nick Colson hauled in a 10-yard TD aerial from Gene McGuire. Tyler Reese rallied the Spartans in the fourth quarter, firing TD strikes of 21 and 32 yards to Tim Yeager while Ryan Skorupka scored on runs of 49 and 48 yards as he finished with 163 yards rushing on 19 carries. Jefferson defeated High Point 56-28 as quarterback B.J. Stokes completed 10 of 17 aerial attempts for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Chris Hansen rushed 28 times for 229 yards including TD runs of 4, 18, 26 and 36 yards. Vernon edged Kittatinny 14-9 after Justin Gannon started the game by returning the opening kickoff 86 yards to the end zone. T.J. Diggles busted one yard over the goal line in the second quarter. Hopatcong defeated Wallkill Valley 40-22 in a non-league encounter contested under the lights in Hopatconmg on Thursday eveningl. Joe Martinek powered the Chiefs’ attack, toting the pigskin 34 times as he churned out a career-high 335 yards while scoring three times. He finished the game with 1418 yards rushing for the season to set a new Hopatcong record eclisping the old standard of 1372 yards set in 1999 by Bobby Smithj. Martinek opened thye scoring when he raced 80 yards to paydirt in the first quarter and finished with a 99-yard TD explosion in the fourth quarter sandwiched around a four-yard scoring blast in the second quarter. | Mark Castiglione toted the pigskin 26 times, churning out 178 yards rushing
as he powered Wallkill Valley to a 34-7 victory over Newton in a non-league gridiron confrontation played Saturday
afternoon in Hardyston. The win evened the Rangers' overall record at 4-4 as they are eligible for a berth in the
NJSIAA post-season playoffs. Castiglione scored three touchdowns on runs of 19 and 36 yards as well as a punt return of 31 yards. Quarterback Mike Hormn flipped TD aerials of four yards to Stoch Kechko and 49 yards to Cody Herbert while Mike Sudol booted four extra points. Newton averted a shutout when Sam Paul located a seam in the Ranger defense and raced 76 yards to the end zone in the fourth quarter. Lenape Valley rebounded from last week's loss to Pope John by rolling to a 28-0 victory over High Point as the Patriots improved to 6-2 to qualify for the NJSIAA post-season playoffs. Bob Gallagher rushed for only 36 yards on nine attempts, but scored a pair of six-pointers on runs of nine and six yards. He also hauled in a 29-yard TD strike from quarterback Scott Vladyka who completed five of nine aerial attempts for 90 yards. | Jason Harper scored twice in the second quarter as Pope John remained unbeaten
by defeating Lenape Valley 14-7 in the battle for the SCIL title on Saturday afternoon in Sparta. It was the seventh
straight win for the Lions while the Pariots sagged to 5-2. Harper raced 29 yards into the end zone to open the scoring and Mike Dillon converted the PAT. Harper bolted two yards over the goal later in the quarter to up the Lions' advantage to 14 points by the halftime break. Lenape Valley got on the board in the third quarter when Bill Gallagher blasted five yards into the end zone and Robbi Klinck booted the extra point. Sparta routed High Point 45-14 after jumping out to a 15 point lead in the first quarter. The Spartans steadily pulled away ro their fourth "W" of the campaign as the defensive unit put the first two points on the board with a safety in the opening quarter and Mike Roselle recovered a blocked punt I the end zone to start the scoring in the second quarter. Alex Heckman booted four extra points and connected on a 42-yard field goal. Jefferson led 6-0 at intermission before defeating Hopatcong 37-24. He added TD runs of two and two yards while Ron Whitesell bolted 21 yards into the end zone. Jeff Kistle hit Alex Durino with a 24-yar TD strike. Newton's points came on a 24-yard TD run by Steven Zander who also booted the extra point. Vernon rallied to defeat West Milford 31-21 in a non-league conflict played in West Milford on Friday evening. Trailing 14-0, quarterback B.J. Fusco tossed the pigskin to Dannu Butel who broke loose and raced 50 yards into the end zone. Ryan Anzelone booted the first of four staight extra points and split the uprights with a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Justin Gannon returneda punt 55 yards to paydist and the second quarter and hooked up with Fusco on a 70-yard TD bomb in the third quarter before Robbie Jordan bolted four yards over the goal. Wallkill Valley led all the way in posting a 14-7 victory over North Warren in another non-league confrontation played in Blairstown on Friday. Mark Castiglione tossed an option pass to Mike Sudol who turned the play into a 50-yard touchdown in the second quarter. | In what is becoming a weekly ritual, Pope John's Jason Harper powered the
Lions to a 48-20 victory over High Point by rushing for 365 yards on 26 carries as he scored six touchdowns on
runs of 48, 10, 71, 2, 26 and 2 yards. It was the sixth straight "W" for head coach Vic Paternostro's
unbeaten Lions and set up the "Game of the Year" for Saturday between Pope John and head coach Don Smolyn's
second-place Patriots of Lenape Valley. Vernon toppled Sparta 26-21 as Ryan Anzelone's pair of field goals proved to be decisive. Anzelone split the uprights with a 24-yarder in the second quarter and iced the verdict with a 23-yard yard boot in the fourth quarter, Robbie Jordan, who picked up 99 yards rushing on 17 tries, opened the scoring when he blasted one yard into the end zone in the opening quarter. A five-yard TD strike from BJ. Fusco to Danny Buttel upped the Vikings' advantage to 14-0 before Ryan Skorupka broke loose and raced 64 yards into the end zone for Sparta. Skorupka was the top ground gainer, picking up 168 yards on 22 attempts. T.J. Diggles added a four-yard TD run for the Vikings in the third quarter. Jefferson bridged the second and thrid quarters with a 34-0 run n the way to routing Newton 40-7. Chris Hansen, who churned ouyt 137 yards rushing on 15 carries, scored four touchdowns. He bolted 33, one and 35 yards into the end zone and hauled in a TD strike of five yards from B.J. Stokes who also tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Buddy Miller. Hopatcong led all the way in defeating Kittatinny 20-6. Ian Evans scored the first two touchdowns on runs of one and 23 yards. In a non-league matchup of SCIL schools, Lenape Valley rolled to 35-6 triumph over Wallkill Valley. Scott Vladyka connected on six of 10 aerial attempts for 88 yards including TD strikes of 37 yards to Mike Chernesky and four-uards to Joe Farruggia who churned out a game-high 125 yards rushing on 11 carries. | Lenape Valley remained in contention for the SCIL gridiron title by rolling
to a 28-7 victory over Hopatcong on Friday evening. The Patriots' fourth victory in five games kept them in second
place behind Pope John. LVR got on the board in the opening quarter when Bill Gallagher bolted two yards into the
end zone and Rob Klinck booted the first of his four straight extra point placements through the posts. Hopatcong
pulled into a brief deadlock early in the second quarter before Dan Pregno returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards
to paydirt. Rob Borgstrom scooped up a loose pigskin in the third quarter and raced 10 yards over the goal line
before Scott Vladyka raced 24 yards to glory to ice verdict in the fourth quarter. Pope John remained unbeaten by thumping Jeffeston 49-6 in Jefferson as senior tailback Jason Harper rushed for 269 yards and four touchdowns in 73, 66, 20 and 5 yards. Gene McGuire tossed a six yard TD strike to Nick Colson, Mark Meehan raced 13 yards into the end zone and Allen Iannacone bolted 22 yards to paydirt for the Lions. Vernon blanked Newton 30-0 as the Vikings built up a 326-53 advantage in total yards while improving to 3-2. Tom Geerlof put six points on the board for the special teams when he pounced on a blocked punt in the end zone to open the scoring in the first quarter. Dan Lisa followed with a 58-yard punt return to paydirt in the second quarter and the Vikings forced a safety to close out the scoring in the final quarter when the Braves fumbled the ball out of the end zone. In between, Robbie Jordan bolted 25 yards over the goal line and Justin Gannon scampered 59 yards to glory. Kittatinny defeated High Point 17-0 but the Wildcats managed 238 yards of total offense to the Cougars 198. Randy Walther raced 37 yards for the first points of the game in the second quarter and Jeff Kistle teamed up with Josh Reed on a 32-yard TD aerial. Ernie Wunder, who converted bot PATs, booted a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Wallkill Valley romped to a 30-12 victory over Hackettstown in Hardyston as Mark Castiglione toted the pigskin 28 times, churning out 132 yards rushing while the Rangers defensive unit limited the Tigers to 19 yards of total offense in the first half. Unbeaten Lakeland rallied to defeat Sparta 17-10 in a non-league matchup of potential NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group II squads in Wanaque on Friday evening. Alex Heckman split the uprights with a 30-yard field goal for the only points of the opening half. Lakeland pulled out to a 10-3 lead before Tom Lindsley hooked up with Dan D'Angelo on a 55-yard TD pass in the third quarter. The score remained knotted until the Lancers scored with 4:40 remaining on the game clock and then halted Sparta's final drive at the 25-yard line by sacking Lindsey twice in the waning moments. |

| Sparta, which romped to a 43-6 victory over Hopatcong on Saturday at Richard
Cassels Memorial Field, travels to Wanaque to clash with undefeated Lakeland Regional under the lights on Friday
evening. The Spartans, who are tied with Lenape Valley for second place behind Pope John in the SCIL standings,
will look to snap the Lancers' unbeaten string at four straight. A member of the Northern Hills Conference, Lakeland romped to a 34-7 triumph over West Orange last Saturday with quarterback Eric Santagato tossing TD aerials of 29, 28 and 10 yards whole Robert Casanova scored on runs of 26 and 30 yards. Sparta roared out to a 42-point advantage before the Chiefs got on the board in the final quarter. Quarterback Tom Lindsay hooked up with Bobby Ryan on TD tosses of 27 and 62 yards and added an eight-yard TD strike to John Hooper to highlight the Spartans' attack. Lenape Valley edged Vernon 30-28 as Joe Farruggia picked off a Viking aerial on the Patriots' 40-yard line with 57 ticks remaining on the game clock to seal the victory. On the offensive side of the ball, Farruggia located a seam in Vernon's defense and broke loose on a 77-yard TD run in the third quarter to finish with 103 yards rushing on 11 attempts as he was named the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com Player of the Week. Mike Avola churned out a game-high 146 yards on 16 carries, racing 55 yards into the end zone with LVR's final six-pointer. High Point rolled to a 41-13 victory over Newton in Wantage as Pat Helmer gained 105 yards rushing including TD runs of 33 and 3 yards. Quartback Brian Konopka, who connected on 4 of 5 aerial attenpts for 95 yards, opened the scoring with a 22-yard TD strike to J.P. Noon early in the opening quarter. Kittatinny moved out to a 14-0 lead by halftime and went on to defeat Jefferson 20-6. Rob Whitesell scored twice for the Cougars on runs of 6 and 3 yards. Pope John came on strong in the second half to defeat Orange of the Northern Hills Conference 41-21 after trailing 21-20 at the intermission. Jason Harper toted the pigskin 33 times, picking up 346 yards while scoring three TDs on runs of 82, 3 and 1 yards. Wallkill Valley dropped to 1-3 with its independent schedule as the Rangers lost to Brearley Kenilworth in Union County by a score of 26-0. The Bears who play in the Mountain Valley Conference and improved to 3-1, limited the Rangers to 169 yards of total offense. |

This statement was confirmaed once again when last Thursday night, Smolyn had his Patriots primed and the result
was a 13-6 victory over two-time defending SCIL champion Sparta. The win also snapped the Spartans' winning streak. Quarterback Scott Vladyka plunged one-yard into the end zone to give the Patriots a 7-0 lead ion the opening quarter when Robbie Klinck spilt the pipes with his extra point placement. Sparta pulled to within one point at 7-6 when Ryan Skorupka rambled 30 yards into the end zone before the quarter ended. Lenape Valley added six points to its lead in the third quarter when Bill Gallagher blasted one yard over the goal line. Defensively, Justin Nadeau and Shawn Peer picked off Spartan passes. Joe Martinek rushed 21 times for 228 yards, scoring on runs of 3, 46 and 9 yards as Hopatcong trounced High Point 35-8. It was another dominating performance for Pope John as the Lions routed Newton 42-0 with Jason Harper chruning out 221 yards rushing on 14 tries while scoring on runs of 1, 9, 9, 54 and 38 yards. Allen Iannacone added the final six-pointer when he raced five yards to paydirt as Pope John built up a 405-144 advantage in total yards. Vernon rolled to a 21-0 victory over Jefferson. B.J. Fusco tossed a 36-yard TD strike to Dan Buttel as the Vikings led 7-0 at the intermission. T.J. Diggles raced 17 yards to paydirt in the third quarter and Robbie Jordan broke loose and scampered 49 yards into the end zone in the fourth quarter. | B.J. Stokes captured the offensive spotlight in leading Jefferson to a 39-14
victory over Montville in a non-league gridiron contest on Saturday. Stokes fired three TD aerials in the first
half as the Falcons exploded out to a 32-0 lead by the halftime break and went on to up their record to 2-0. Stokes hooked up with Vincent Macaluso on a 62-yard TD bomb that opened the scoring. He followed with a 14-yard touchdown strike to Buddy Miller before Christian Hansen found a seam in the Mustangs' defense and raced 89 yards to paydirt as Jefferson led 18-0 by the end of the opening quarter. Miller hauled in a 32-yard TD aerial to start the second quarter scoring and Hansen plunged two yards into the end zone to up the margin to 32 points by the intermission. Jason Harper toted the pigskin 27 times, churning out 248 yards rushing and three touchdowns as he led Pope John to a 42-27 victory over Hopatcong on Sunday. He scored on runs of 29, 2 and 31 yards while Mark Meehan returned an interception 42 yards to paydirt and registered a team-high 13 tackles for the Lions. Lenape Valley rebounded from a season-opening setback to blank Kittatinny 14-0. Bart Albrecht hauled in a 54-yard touchdown bomb from Scott Vladyka while Bill Gallagher rushed 28 times, picking up 71 yards for the Patriot who outgained the Cougars 206-116. Matt Dolce and Steve Chemi picked off interceptions to key the Patriots defense. Justin Gannon returned a kickoff 94-yards for a score to spark Vernon to a 28-0 victory over High Point. Robbie Jordan rushed for 119 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown run. Defending SCIL champion Sparta breezed to a 41-0 rout of Newton. The Spartans exploded for 15 points in the first quarter and added 20 in the second to open up a 35-0 advantage by the halftime break. Ryan Skorupka gained 116 yards rushing on eight carries, including TD runs of 50 and four yards. On Friday evening in Mahwan, Mike Sudol caught two touchdown passes and kicked a 32-yard field goal to spark Wallkill Valley to an 18-7 victory over Mahwah. Sudol hauled in a 26-yard pass from Mike Hem in the first quarter to stake the Rangers to an early lead. The Thunderbirds tied it at 7-7 in the second quarter when Eric Kamback hit Ken Ebeling on a 21-yard scoring pass. Wallkill Valley took the lead for good in the third when Hem hit Sudol from 14 yards to make it 13-7. |

| Newton snapped a 24-game losing streak in Sussex County Interscholastic
League competition by opening the 2004 gridiron campaign with a 21-6 victory over Hopatcong at the John F. Auwerda
Athletic Complez in Newton on Friday evening. Jefferson, Pope John and Sparta posted victories while Wallkill Valley,
playing an independent schdule, was defeated 21-7 by Ramsey of the North Bergen Interscholastic Athletic League. Joe Frangieh put Newton in front 7-0 in the opening quarter when he bolted four yards into the end zone. Michael Assante split the pipes with his extra point attempt. Matt Dowling rambled 68 yards to paydirt in the second quarter and Assante added a second PAT. Frangieh added a one-yard plunge over the goal line in the third quarter before Hopatcong got on the scoreboard. Pope John looked its usual self by inflicting a 42-14 defeat on Vernon after the Vikings broke out to a 14-0 lead. Sophomore quarterback Gene McGuire got the Lions on the board with an eight-yard TD pass to Andrew Costello before the first quarter ended. Jason Harper took control in the second quarter, scoring on runs of one and 45 yards to boost the Lions into the lead for good. Mark Meehan scored twice in the third quarter, once on a five-yard run before picking off a Viking aerial and returning the interception 20 yards to paydirt. Allen Iannacone's 26-yard TD run completed the scoring. Sparta's defending champions posted a 24-0 shutout over Kittatinny in Sparta as Rob Ambrosino enjoyed the thrill of victory in his head coaching debut. Ryan Skorupka powered the attack, toting the pigskin 30 times for 188 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. Alex Heckman had opened the scoring when he booted a 36-yard field goal. Tom Lindsley added a pair of insurance six-pointers, racing 48 and three yards to paydirt. Jefferson snapped a 20-20 deadlock at the end of regulation when Chris Hansen scored his fourth TD of the game in overtime to lift the Falcons to a 26-20 win over Lenape Valley. Hansen, who rushed 28 times for 109 yards, scored from four, three, one and one yards as he was named the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com player of the week. High Point was impressive in defeating Wayne Valley of the Northern Hills Conference 25-7 in Passaic County. Steve D'Amato, who churned out 117 yards rushing on five carries, plunged one yard into the end zone to open the scoring in the second quarter. J.P. Noon upped the advantage to 12-0 before halftime when he scooped up a fumble and raced two yards over the goal line. Brian Konapka tossed an 18-yard TD aerial to Noon in the fourth quarter and D'Amato found a seam in the Patriots defense and broke loose on a 94-yard touchdown run to lock up the win. Mike Hern flipped a 12-yard TD strike to Tyler Wenz to get the Rangers on the board in the fourth quarter. Mike Sudol converted the PAT attempt in a game Wallkill Valley lost 21-7 despite building a 186-172 advantage in offensive yardage. |
