Friday night in Vernon is the place to be

Published in Straus Newspapers week ending September 25

It was interesting week on the local gridirons and this coming week’s schedule promises more excitement. Pope John’s junior tailback Jeremy Tucker scored six times while junior Joe Martinek became Hopatcong’s all-time leading rusher while Jefferson’s B.J. Stokes broke the SCIL record completions in a game when he connected on 29 of 44 aerial attempts for 366 yards. Was Vernon looking ahead to Friday night when the Vikings host Lenape Valley as Stokes’ effort left the Falcons one point short in a 20-19 loss to Vernon?
Sparta scored nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat LVR as Ryan Skorupka toted the pigskin 25 times, rushing for a game-high 160 yards including a 55-yard TD run in the first quarter that opened the scoring.

Can Anzelone kick Vikings to SCIL title?

By Dennis Wilson, President - Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association

Kicking is a key to team's success and Vernon returns Ryan Anzelone, last year's SCIL/Metropolitan New York Football Writers Special Teams Player of the Year. A senior, Anzelone is outstanding in both phases of the kicking game, providing the Vikings with a valuable contributor for long-range points as well as field position.
Vic Paternostro and Don Smolyn, two of the greatest coaches in New Jersey scholastic football, will again have Pope John and Lenape Valley poised to make a run at the league title after finishing 1-2 in 2004 but Anzelone's kicking abilities project the Vernon Vikings to be the pre-season favorite for the crown.
Last season, Vernon tied Sparta for third but also defeated Montclair and West Milford in non-league confrontations. Head coach Chuck Tepper's arsenal is packed with quality talent in addition to Anzelone who also excels at the defensive end post. T.J. Diggles and Anthony Palmisano are lienbackers who quickly fill the gaps while Justin Gannon excels as a running back who can also haul in passes coming out of the backfield.
Paternostro's Lions finished 11-1 last year, losing to nationally-ranked St. Joseph Regional/Montvale in the Non-Public championship game. Junior Gene McGuire will add a new element to the Lions' normal ground game as he is a highl-regarded quarterback. Pete Corrigan is the leader of the defensive unit.
Lenape Valley missed claiming a state sectional championship when unbeaten Lakeland pulled out an overtime victory in the title game. Defense will again be a strong point for Smolyn's Patriots.
Hopatcong, led by the SCIL's top running back, junior Joe Martinek, Jefferson, with B.J. Stokes taking the snaps, and Sparta, looking to regain the title it won in 2003, will also be in the running.
