Gemon hat trick propels Vikings

Ashley Gemon turned in a hat trick effort to spur Vernon to a 6-0 rout of Sparta in an SCIL field hockey match on Fruday. Gemon opened the scoring 4:57 into the game and added a pair of insurance goals in the second half. She was chosen the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com Player of the Week as the Lady Vikings enjoyed their third thrill of victory against a dozen setbacks. Amanda Matos chipped in with a pair of goals with Lyndsey Morris adding one while Brianna Capuano and Christine Smith were credited with assists. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Umstead picked up the shutout "W" between the pipes without making an official save.
High Point was limited to only one official shot on goal and it proved to be the game-winner as the Wildcats edged Pope John 1-0 on Saturday. Melinda Bellis netted the game-winning tally 43 seconds into the second half with Sarah Bell and Becky Penhaker picking up assists. Goalie Lauren Fasano, a sophomore, excelled as she came up with 18 saves.
Nicole DiBattista and Catherine McArthur tallied two goals apiece as Kittatinny routed Hopatcong 7-0 in Hampton on Friday. McArthur scored the game-winner three minutes into the while Melanie Kistle contributed a goal and assist. Ali Ball and Lauren Nicomini added goals with Catie Abrams and Erin McGinniss credited with assists. Goalie Kelly McCaskill recorded the shutout.
Amanda Nann scored twice and dished off a pair of assists as Wallkill Valley blanked Lenape Valley 5-0. Her sister Samantha came up with 10 saves to record her fifth shutout of the season in the goal. Karen Buda chipped in with a goal and assist while Nicole Travolta added a goal. Jess Petronaci and Lauren Sweller dished off assists.

Kara Buda turned in a hat trick performance as Wallkill Valley rolled to a 4-1 victory over High Point in an SCIL field hockey match on Monday. Buda converted two assists from Abby Tilton into first half goals and opened the second half scoring by converting an assist from Amanda Nann and was named the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com/Richards and Summers Player of the Week. Nann completed the scoring with eight minutes left on the game clock off an assist from Buda while Samantha Nann recorded the "W" in the goal by making two saves.
Lenape Valley defeated Jefferson 1-0 when Brittany Holl scored off an assist from Tempe Newson in the second half. Goalkeeper Samantha Markferding made two saves.
Gabby Luongo came up four saves as Pope John blanked Vernon 4-0. Nicole Laemers scored twice with Mally Clark and Amy Speckherdt adding solo goals. Meredith Harclerode was credited with the only assist of the contest.

Hazen's hat trick propels Wildcats

High Point rolled to a 5-0 rout of Sparta in a SCIL field hockey match highlighted by a hat trick effort by the Wildcats' Ashley Hazen. The win raised High Points' record to 4-3 Hazen netted three goals and was named the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com/Richards and Summers Player of the Week. Melinda Bellis and Jess Grimm each chipped in with a goal and assist. Lauren Fasano stopped one shot on goal to earn credit for the shutout.
Amanda Nann continued to excel, netting the only goal of the game off an assist from Nicole Travolta 12:30 into the game as Wallkill Valley edged Vernon 1-0. Her sister Samantha Nann came up with one save to record the shutout "W" between the pipes.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Lenape Valley scored three times in the second half to forge a 3-1 win over Pope John. Megan Cicchetti tied the game with an assist from Tempe Newson before Allie Schubert scored the game-winner with Brittany Holl getting an assist. Krysta Arbolina added an insurance goal with Sarah Edwards awarded an assist while goalkeeper Samantha Markferding made 11 saves.
Dana Edwards tallied a pair of unassisted goals as Jefferson squeaked out a 2-1 win over Hopatcong. Goalie Kristi Botche made nine saves.

Schubert's hat trick foils Chiefs

Allie Schubert captured the SCIL field hockey spotlight as she turned in a hat trick performance to ignite Lenape Valley to a 7-0 rout of Hopatcong. Schubert netted three goals and dished off an assist and has been selected the sussexcountyinterscolasticleague.com/Richards and Summers Player of the Week. Megan Cicchetti, who picked up two assists, opened the scoring six minutes into the game with Schubert recording an assist. Schubert scored twice within two and half minutes, Danielle Sangillo netted a goal, and Schubert completed her hat trick with 30 seconds remaining in the first half as the Patriots surged to a 5-0 lead. Sarah Edwards and Sangillo completed the scoring parade in the second half while goalkeeper Samantha Markferding stopped seven shots to record the shutout between the pipes.
Jefferson edged Pope John 2-1 in overtime when Melissa Adams scored seven minutes into the second OT period. Jessica Galfo boosted the Falcons into a 1-0 lead at 19:52 only to have the Lions' Meredith Harclerode knot the score with two seconds left in regulation.
Newton surged to a 5-0 lead by halftime highlighted by Heather Connelly's 100th career goal as the Braves defeated Vernon 5-0. Ashley Meisinger assisted on Connelly's two goals and also scored while Natalie Elvidge and Amy Keegan added goals.
Amanda Nann scored twice and distributed a pair of assists as Wallkill Valley rolled to a 5-2 win over Sparta. Carly Bargile, Lauren Sweller and Nicole Travolta added goals for the Rangers who improved to 4-1. Katherine Roddy gave the first-year Sparta team a brief 1-0 lead when she scored the first goal of the game at 11:30.

Connelly returns as "scoring machine"

Newton’s Heather Connelly, already the SCIL’s career and single-season scoring leader in field hockey, is off to an outstanding start in her senior season, collecting eight goals and three assists in the first two games. On Wednesday, Connelly had a hat trick in the first half and finished with four goals and two assists as the Braves romped to an 8-0 victory over Sparta. Amy Keegan chipped in with a pair of goals while Natalie Elvidge and Heather McGuire completed the scoring parade. Amanda Miller dished off a pair of assists with Elvidge, Ashley Meisinger, Lia Ordile and Devon Westra picking up solo assists.
Amanda Nann scored twice and dished off an assist on the first goal of the game by Kara Buda as Wallkill Valley blanked Jefferson 3-0. Samantha Nann earned the shutout in the goal by coming up with a pair of saves.
Pope John pulled out a 4-3 win over Hopatcong in overtime when Katie Frick tallied the game-winner eight minutes into overtime. Nicole Loemers scored twice for the Lions with Samantha Bell scoring the other goal off an assist by Meredith Harclerode.
Val Hanna and Lyndsay Lyons both tallied a goal and dished off an assist as Lenape Valley rolled to a 5-2 win over North Warren in the "Battle of the Patriotrs" played in Stanhope. Allie Schubert opened the scoring 1:31 into the game off an assist from Tempe Newson who scored later in the first half with Megan Cicchetti picking up an assist.

Katie Frick and Nicole Laemers both tallied two goals as Pope John blanked Vernon 5-0 to open the SCIL field hockey campaign. Goalkeeper Gabby Longo came up with five saves to preserve the shutout. Laemars netted an unassisted goal 3:54 into the game and Meredith Harclerode made it 2-0 at the 26:16 mark. Frock tallied her first goal less than two minutes later as the Lions opened up a three-goal advantage by the intermission.
Sparta played its first varsity match since 1986 and the long absence from the sport was evident when Kittatinny rolled to a 6-0 win. Melissa Kistle scored twice for the Cougars with Melanie Beir, Nicole DiBattista, Erin McGinnis and Lauren Nicomini also depositing balls in the Spartans’ cage.
Samantha Markferding came up with five saves as Lenape Valley blanked Jefferson 2-0. Krysta Arbolina and Sarah Edwards scored for the Patriots.
Nicole Travolta scored twice in the second hald as Wallkill Valley snapped a 1-1 deadlock and defeated High Point 3-1. Amanda Nann, who opened the scoring 3:48 into the game, dished off assists on both of Travolta’s goals and was chosen the sussexcountyinterscholasticleague.com/Richards and Summers Player of the Week.
