Vikings ousted from states

Seeded No. 21, Vernon exploded out of the blocks, opening up with a run of nine straight points against 12th-seeded Shawnee in Medford on Tuesday. Shawnee battled back to edge the Vikings 26-24 in the first game and followed with a 25-17 victory to defeat Vernon 2-0. Kathleen Brennan and Faith Sudol both scooped up 10 digs.
Katie Bellesheim turned in an impressive effort in Sparta's 2-1 loss to Lacordaire Academy of Upper Montclair last Monday. Bellesheim served 11 winning points, blocked three shots and slammed a kill as the Spartans lost by scores of 20-25, 25-21, 25-17. Kaitlyn Heckenberger was credited with 10 service points, three aces and two assists while Leslie Stenkamp chipped in with nine service points, two of which were aces, four digs a pair of kills.

Sperring sets Spartan record

Senior setter Baylea Sperring set a school career record as Sparta rolled to a 2-0 victory over Mount Olive in a girls' volleyball match played Wednesday in Flanders. Sperring was credited with four assists, raising her career total 101 and giving her the Lady Spartan all-time record. Sperring was chosen the Sussex County/Sparta Athletic Club Player of the Week. Casey Roselle, a senior outside hitter, chipped in with five digs, three kills and a pair of aces while sophomore outside hitter Becky Ryancontributed 11 service points as Sparta boosted its record to 7-12. Two days earlier, Sparta dropped a 2-0 verdict to Lakeland, losing by scores of 25-23, 25-20. Caitlin Heckenberger recorded six assists and served nine winning points while Ryan scooped up seven digs. Roselle finished with five kills and four digs.
Vernon went three games in losing to Madison 2-1 as the Dodgers won by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 25-19. Chelsea Wagner scooped up 10 digs and blasted a pair of kills while Abbi Turner had two kills and blocked four shot. Kate Niemiera finished with six kills.
Kristin McGinn served 10 winning points including an ace, slammed three kills and dished off seven assists as Pope John defeated the Academy of St. Elizabeth 2-0. Mary Boern slammed five kills as the Lions won games of 25-22, 25-23. Tiffany Cruz was credited with 10 service points of which three were aces and picked up five digs. On Wednesday., the Lions dropped a 2-0 decision to Cliffside Park, falling by scores of 29-27, 25-18. McGinn recorded 13 service points.

Lions rally topples Rams

Pope John rallied to edge Ramsey 2-1 in Bergen County as the Lady Lions improved to 13-3. Francesca Incarico delivered 13 winning points, including five aces as Pope John won by scores of 20-25, 26-24, 25-23. Incarico was chosen the Sussex County/Sparta Athletic Club Player of the Week. Jennifer Jenkins-Dean blocked a shot and spiked three kills to key the Lady Lions at the net.
Sparta lost to Fort Lee 2-0 on Saturday, dropping games of 25-10, 25-16 to the Bridgewomen. Senior Baylea Sperring dished off five assist, slammed three kills and picked up three digs while Casey Roselle was credited with four digs and three kills. Sophomore Taylor Smith spiked three kills and blocked a shot with Tristan Gromeck scooping up four digs as the Lady Spartans fell to 6-11. Earlier in the week, Park Ridge blanked Sparta 2-0 as the Owls won games of 25-18, 25-12. Natalie Read blocked three shots while Roselle chipped in with a kill, four digs and served a pair of aces.
Vernon dropped a 2-0 verdict to Whippany Park as the Wildcats posted wins of 25-21, 25-16. The Vikings were sparked by Kate Niemiera who scooped up 14 digs and Vicky Carson who picked up 10.

Cruz named Player of the Week

Tiffany Cruz rallied Pope John to a 2-1 win over Lacordaire Academy of Upper Montclair on Thursday and was voted the Sussex County/Sparta Athletic Club Volleyball Player of the Week. The Lions won by scores of 20-25, 25-21, 25-20 as Cruz delivered 23 successful service points, including four aces, while scooping up 10 digs. Mary Boeren spiked five kills and recorded eight service points with a pair of aces while Lauren Peach slammed four kills and served six winning points as the Lions improved to 12-3.
Fair Lawn snapped Vernon's five match winning streak as the Cutters won by scores of 25-28, 25-23. Abbi Turner blocked four shots and Kate Kiemiera spiked four kills and served two aces. The fifth win was a 2-0 victory over West Orange two days earlier with the Vikings posting scores of 25-21, 26-24. Turner contributed four kills and two blocks at the net while Chelsea Wagner scooped up 11 digs.
Sparta dropped a 2-0 verdict to Roxbury, losing by scores of 25-11, 25-11 on Friday. Casey Roselle blasted four kills, picked up three digs and recorded an ace while Kaitlyn Heckenberger dished off six assists. Natalie Read was credited with three blocked shots and a kill. A day earlier, the Spartans defeated Cliffside Park 2-1, winning by scores of 25-22, 13-25, 25-23. Roselle picked up 16 digs and registered four kills and a pair of aces while Chelsey Caruso spiked nine kills and dished off three assists.

Lady Vikings win back-to-back-to-back

Julieann Meerendonk excelled at the net as Vernon edged Pope John 2-1 in a girls volleyball match on Tuesday. Meerendonk spiked a season-high 10 kills as the Vikings won by scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 in handing the Lions their first setback of the season. Meerendonk was voted the Sussex County/Sparta Athletic Club Player of the Week. Rachel Pantaleo and Alyssa Zmuda combined on 20 assists while Kate Niemiera slammed eight kills.
Vernon surprised Kearny 2-0 on Friday, winning scores of 28-26, 25-10. Kathleen Brennan keyed the second game rout when she served the final 10 winning points, four of which were aces. Chelsea Wagner served three aces and scooped up eight digs while Zmuda dished off nine assists and picked up six digs. A day earlier, the Vikings defeated Sparta 2-0 posting scores of 25-23 and 26-24. Faith Sudol scooped up nine digs while Zmuda had seven assists and served an ace. Wagner, who rallied the Vikings from a 16-11 deficit in the second game by serving seven straight points including three aces to boost Vernon into a 18-17, finished the match with five kills, five aces and six digs.
Sparta defeated South Plainfield, winning by scores of 16-25, 25-10, 25-16. Casey Roselle recorded four kills, four sigs and a pair of service aces. The Spartans opened the week with a 2-0 win over Lacordaire of Upper Montclair, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-17. Roselle served a dozen winning points while Aimee Quinn served 10 winners, including two aces.
Pope John sports a 9-3 record as several Lions have posted outstanding stats. Mary Boeren has spiked 47 kills and served 22 aces while Francesca Tricarion has 10 kills, 16 aces and a team-high 60 digs. Kristin Mcinn has slammed 23 kills, served 20 aces, picked up 32 digs and dished off 88 assists while Lauren Peach has registered 31 kills, 15 aces , 42 digs and a six blocked shots. Jennifer Jenkins-Dean has blasted 29 kills while Tiffany Cruz has served 20 aces and scooped up 54 digs.

Turner's blocks elevate Vikings

Abbi Turner was impressive at the net as she blocked three shots and spiked three kills to spur Vernon to a 2-0 victory over Lakeland as the Lady Vikings pulled out games of 25-23, 25-23. Turner was named the Sussex County/Sparta Athletic Club Player of the Week. Julieann Meerendonk scooped up eight digs and blasted three kills.
Pope John rolled to its ninth straight "W" by routing Ridge 2-0 as the Lady Lions won by scores of 25-11, 25-13. Mary Boeren delivered six aces and slammed a kill while Kristin McGinn dished off four assists, picked up three digs, served a pair of aces and spiked two kills. Lauren Peach recorded three kills and an ace for the Lions.
Sparta dropped a 2-0 verdict to Lakeland, losing by scores of 25-9, 25-11. Natalie Read served 10 winning points including a pair of aces while Baylea Sperling recorded four assists and two kills. Taylor Smith chipped in with two kills and blocked a shot.

Unbeaten Lady Lions roll to 7th straight victory

Pope John cemented its claim as the No. 1 girls volleyball program in Sussex County by routing the Academy of St. Elizabeth 2-0 on Friday as the Lady Lions won by scores of 25-20, 25-19. Mary Boeren spiked nine kills and served an ace to spark PJ. Boeren was chosen the Sussex County/Sparta Athletic Club Player of the Week.
Vernon held on to defeat Passaic Tech 2-1 as the Vikings won 25-17, 22-25, 26-24. Chelsea Wagner served six aces and Lorin Andalora scooped up eight digs. Two days earlier, the Vikings defeated Kearny 2-0 posting scores of 25-16, 26-24. Rachel Panteleo dished off a game-high dozen assists while Kathleen Brennan finished with six aces and served the final four points on the second game.
Sparta fell to Morris Knolls 2-0, losing by scores of 25-18, 26-24. Casey Roselle was impressive for the Lady Spartans, serving 14 successful service points, slamming a kill and picking up three digs while Leslie Stenkamp served four winning points and was credited with two digs and a kill. Two days earlier, the Lady Spartans string of three straight wins to open the campaign was snapped by Passaic Tech when the Bulldogs won 2-0 on scores of 25-18, 25-22. Roselle scooped up 10 digs, Stenkamp recorded five kills while Baylea Sperring dished off six assists.
